LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Police Department is tightening its policy on handling illegal immigrants to allow officers to check the status of suspected felons.
If approved, the new rules would be a shift from a 1979 policy that prevents officers from inquiring about a person's immigration status to encourage illegal immigrants who had witnessed or been victims of crimes to cooperate with police without fear of deportation.
Assistant Police Chief George Gascon said the proposal would direct officers to report suspected felons in the United States illegally to their supervisors, who would then consult with immigration officials.
Officers would be able to arrest felons if it's determined they are illegal immigrants, Gascon said.
Several months ago, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department changed its policy and began checking the immigration status of foreign-born inmates and turning illegal immigrants over to federal authorities.
Still, LAPD officials said they encourage immigrants to come forward with information on crimes.
"We do not want people in fear of coming to us just because of their undocumented status," Gascon said. "(But) when crime is allowed to thrive in the community, everyone suffers."
The ACLU should be mobilizing as we speak... those ratty asses.
One of the other crippling gifts that Jimmy Carter left America was the decriminalization of illegal Aliens.
This will be quickly reverse if Antonio V wins...
What? I thought that felons could be arrested regardless of their immigration status. But then this is California.
Notice that they're limiting this to "felons." If you're a "law abiding" illegal, no problemo.
Here's more on the story from the Left Angeles Times no less. LOL

I assume they meant that illegals with a felony on their record, not ones who are committing or are wanted for committing a crime. But as you say, this is LA.
Now imagine that that same cop sees an illegal alien member of the 18th Street gang hanging out on Cesar Chavez Blvd. The 18th Streeter has already been deported back to Mexico following conviction for murder. Upon deportation, he was forbidden from ever returning to the U.S. His mere presence in L.A. now is a federal felony punishable by 20 years in jail. Can the cop arrest him?"
"Absolutely notnot under the old special order 40, nor under the proposed revision. According to the contemplated new rules, that cop first has to call his supervisor; that supervisor has to call federal immigration officials at ICE; ICE officials have to go before a federal judge to get an arrest warrant; then with warrant in hand, the cop may finally arrest the felonious 18th Streeter. Oops. Hes gone."
The first thing they should do is load up the Metrolink trains from LA COUNTY JAIL and deliver them right to the border in TJ.
It's just amazing how much stuff that self-righteous little creep was able to institute in this nation and all of it BAD!!!
What Carter did to our nation in four years was terrible.
He gutted the CIA, turned the FBI and Justice into PC departments, enabled the Iranians to set up the current world Islamic Terrorism, and he damn near destroyed our military.
Thank God, Ronald Reagan defeated Carter and was here for two terms, or we would be under communist/Islamo rule.
I'm sure the ACLU, La Raza and you name it are on the verge of letting loose their dogs of war. Could make for a wedge issue in the L.A. mayor's race between do-nothing Hahn and the Mexican socialist challenger.
