Joan Kennedy hurt in fall; son won't seek Senate
Boston Globe ^ | Michael Levenson and John Ellement

Constance Bacon was walking home from the gym in a driving rain Monday, when she spotted a woman lying on the sidewalk on Beacon Street in the Back Bay, raindrops soaking her black pants and long wool overcoat. When Bacon called an ambulance, she said she had no idea it was Joan Bennett Kennedy, a member of one of America's best-known political families.

Kennedy, 68, had apparently tumbled, injuring her shoulder and leaving a gash on her head. When Bacon found her about 5 p.m., Kennedy could not pull herself up from the sidewalk. So Bacon, 35, an artist who lives in the neighborhood, held an umbrella over her head while they waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Yesterday, Kennedy's son, US Representative Patrick J. Kennedy of Rhode Island, announced he will not run for the Senate next year, and an aide said he will return to probate court to renew legal guardianship of his mother, which he and his siblings assumed last year. Kennedy rushed to be with his mother at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Joan Kennedy's friends said yesterday that the incident was an unfortunate setback for a woman dedicated to her favorite charities, notably in the arts.

She has previously described herself as a recovering alcoholic, and last spring her recurring bouts with the disease forced her three children Patrick Kennedy, Edward Kennedy Jr., and Kara Kennedy Allen to take legal control of her affairs.

Patrick Kennedy did not mention the incident in his announcement yesterday, when he said he would not challenge Senator Lincoln Chaffee in 2006. Kennedy said he believed he could best serve Rhode Island by retaining his seat on the House Appropriations Committee.

Kennedy's chief of staff said the congressman made his decision not to run for Senate last weekend, before his mother's accident...

Article posted yesterday said that Joan Kennedy was found on the sidewalk at around 3:30 AM. This one says she was found around 5:00 PM.

Why is it so freaking impossible for the media to get a simple little detail (like the time of day) right?

It seems that the kids are not doing what they went to court to get. They were supposed to be her guardians. Where the h3!! were they? The woman needs a guardian that will monitor and that care of her. I wish her well.

LOL! Good One!

Correction to my post (she says, w/ egg on her face), yesterday's article says 3:00 AM & NOT 3:30 AM.

When the facts don't support your agenda, you lie. That's what the left always does.

Connie Bacon told WHDH-TV (Ch. 7) Kennedy did not appear to be intoxicated when she found her lying outside Bacon's Back Bay apartment early Monday evening.

``She was a little out of it but that could have been because she banged her head,'' said Bacon, who called 911.

It remains unclear exactly what happened to Kennedy. Those close to the family say she was found 3 a.m. Tuesday by a passerby, but a Boston EMS spokesman said an ambulance responded to a call for a ``woman down''at 5:20 p.m. Monday.

(snip)

BTW, the passerby called 911, and according to yesterday's reports there is no police report.

I would bet that they sought and were awarded guardianship over her property not her person. The article says they were awarded guardianship over her affairs, which typically means guardianship over property. The little dears were probably afraid that she would get drunk and squander whatever inheritance they think they're going to get from her.

Basically, guardianship over the person means that they can have her committed against her will.

OK, but who was the 'woman'? (yeh, I know. I'm not sposed to ask that question.)

Course, it is entirely possible that Patrick didn't learn about it until the wee hours & just assumed that the incident had just happened.

Your comments were right on, Doc. Lying alone on a cold sidewalk in the middle of the night is reminiscent of what we always read about derelicts on skid row. There is definitely something creepy and wrong about the "care"her adult children (her "guardians") are providing for her.

This unfortunate woman is undoubtedly unstable, possibly suicidal, and needs loving protection from herself. It's a good thing she wasn't beaten, raped or murdered while out on the streets that night.

With all their money, one would think Joan would get proper care and attention from her children and even her ex-husband, Teddy. Maybe she's such an embarrassment to the lofty Kennedy name, that they subconsciously want her locked up somewhere (or worse) forever.

Reminiscent in some ways of the oldest Joe Kennedy retarded daughter who was tucked away outside the realm of public notice until she passed on.

On the other side of the coin, hardened alcoholics can be uncontrollable even with all the help in the world. It may be that nothing can help Joan any more, short of chaining her to her bed post with a 24-hour guard.

What a mess. Much money, much unhappiness in that family and its extended circle of relatives and ex-relatives.

I kinda doubt that she was walking home from the gym at 3:30AM. But that's the time I heard reported all along. But 3:30AM doesn't jive with a person, a woman coming home from a gym. It does jive with a drunk lying on the street in need of help though.

The face of Ted Kenneday and the face of the Democrat "Dr. Death/Murder/Traitor" Party are one and the same. Ted Kennedy dumped his wife just as Michael Schiavo did. These bastards are cut from the same cloth. May they both, and their political party rot in hell for eternity. Shame on them and their supporters of death. America, wake up, and toss these low lifes to the wolves.

Hmmm...the time discrepancy of 3 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. is a striking similarity to the reports of Marilyn Monroe's death, where the ambulance drivers showed up at her house, took her to the hospital, then the records showed them coming back at a much later time to find her dead.

One other strange coincidence is that the Kennedys were involved in that case as well.

I wondered about that. And if a gym would even be open at that time of day. OTOH, the article says that Bacon is an 'artist' and a lot of artists keep some weird hours.
