An 82-year-old woman who has been squatting at Kaiser Permanente San Rafael Medical Center for more than a year was removed from the hospital Tuesday almost immediately after a Marin County judge authorized it.
Sarah Nome, who has refused all efforts by Kaiser to get rid of her, was whisked by ambulance shortly after 5 p.m. to the Lafayette Convalescent Hospital in Lafayette.
Superior Court Commissioner Harvey Goldfine placed Nome under the temporary conservatorship of Marin County's public guardian, Michele McCabe.
The ruling gave McCabe legal authority not only to have Nome forcibly removed from Kaiser, but also to apply for Medi-Cal benefits on her behalf and to fix up her damaged San Anselmo home, if possible.
"It's a very unfortunate situation," said Dorothy Jones, the chief deputy county counsel, who represented the public guardian at the hearing. "Personally, I would have much preferred for Nome and her daughter to have made arrangements for appropriate care."
Nome, who cannot stand or walk and needs custodial care, was first taken to Kaiser in August 2002. Her legs, already brittle because of blood-thinning medicine she said was prescribed by Kaiser, had broken.
After several weeks, the bones were finally set, and she was admitted to a nursing home. Disputes about the quality of her care led to a lawsuit by Nome against Kaiser and the nursing home, Greenbrae Care Center, alleging neglect and abuse.
She ended up at the Hillside Care Center in San Rafael, but was returned to Kaiser for a psychiatric evaluation in January 2004 after she allegedly threatened to set fire to newspapers.

Maybe she liked the food.
To equate this in ANY way to the Schiavo case is just ludicrous...
Why don't we let those in WFFPP group over there in the Smokey Backroom starve and thirst her to death? They should get their little group together and take turns watching over her as she thrist to death.
Did you even read the story? This woman just "has no other place to go." She does not require machines or feeding tubes. She was not allowed to return to her Nursing home because she was suing them. She was upset because they took her TV away. Meanwhile, she was occupying a bed that an actual patient could have been using. She has a daughter, AND A HOUSE to go to, yet she refuses. Why should she be allowed to "squat" at a hospital?
She can not stand or walk. What good is she? She also has mental problems. I could care less about the Kaiser squatting part of it, all I am saying is that she is helpless so why keep her around? sarcasm off/
Then you think that Kaiser or the state should pay for her to occupy an expensive hospital bed indefinitely? It's not clear who's paying from the article ...to apply for Medi-Cal benefits on her behalf and to fix up her damaged San Anselmo home, if possible ..." but do you think she has a right to the resources of her fellow citizens just because she's old and infirm?
No, I said that I could care less about the Kaiser thing, or her squatting, I have no problem with the hospital putting her somewhere else for her to be taken care of, my point is that she can't walk, has mental problem, so just let WPPFF and Greer and their ilk thirst her to death and the problem is solved. They can all take turns, I mean someone must be in there at all times to make sure no one moistens her lips.
Please don't drag that quarrel to this thread.
This woman is an old leftist activist who thinks the world owes her the best even if she can't pay for it. That kind of puts it in a different light, doesn't it?
As i stated before, to equate this story in any way to the Schiavo case is ludicrous. The whole reason she has gotten away with it for over a yer, is that the hospital wasn't going to put her out on the street. She is now going to a state run nursing home. They never stopped feeding her, or giving her water. They took away her TV and moved her into a room without a window.
Why are they wasting time feeding her? She can't walk and has mental problems. No one would want to live like that. sarcasm off/
Oh, I forgot, the right people are in that group and we are not allowed to mention them.
You know, its not much of a debate when you keep using the same invalid argument (no pun intended)
I think I made my point in more ways than one. I think more people will understand what I have been talking about. You may or may not be one of them.
There you go.
Baloney.
I can't believe they still have a Shiavo thread at the top of FR. I mean, the right people here at FR want her dead and starvation sounds just fine to them.
Why stop at Terri, let's clear all the nursing homes.
Hillside refused to take her back after she was released from Kaiser because, care center officials said, Nome did not pay her bills.
If she was an illegal alien there would be no dispute over her bills. They would just put big fat zeros in where the social security # goes and write it off.
