I came home from school that day and wondered why my cartoons weren't on.

I was in the Spectrum in Philadelphia watching the Indiana Hoosiers beat North Carolina 63-50 to win the 1981 NCAA Championship, which was played the same day. We weren't sure the game was on until just a few hours before tipoff.

Truly awesome. I stayed glued to my TV set the whole time, watching the unfolding of events there. Lech Walesa remains one of my heroes, and the Solidarity movement ranks as one of the greatest worker revolutions the World has seen.
Without the incredible leadership shown by Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul, Margaret Thatcher and Walesa, Brehznev and Co. would have gone ahead with their plans and even more untold numbers of people would have died under the boots of Soviet communism.

I worked at the record store Hinkley said he worked at. Sometime in the evening of the day of the shooting we had secret service show up followed by weeks of calls from reporters and visits by other police agencies.

I remember that day. I got home from HS and was just hanging out with my little sis. We turned on the TV and heard this and started to cry.
I lived in the mid-west growing up. The economy of the 70's had turned our city into a dying city. It was depressing. When RR ran in 80 and won, there was a palpable optimism back. People were proud to be Americans again. They were happy to be able to look to the future and to have a pres who could lead them. I was very aware of this at the time. Seeing RR shot made me feel that this new hope and optimism was in danger, because our leader was in danger of dying.
It was a very emotional day to me, it still is.
