American soldier says killing of injured Iraqi was 'honorable'

WIESBADEN, Germany An American tank commander says he shot a gravely wounded Iraqi man to death last year because it "was the right thing to do."

Captain Roger Maynulet (MAN'-yoo-leht) tells a military court in Germany he killed the unarmed man "to put him out of his misery" and that it was "honorable."

Maynulet's patrol wounded the man when it fired on a car during a search for militiamen south of Baghdad last May. Maynulet maintains the man was too badly injured to survive. He fired two more times.

The 30-year-old from Chicago is being tried on a charge of assault with intent to commit murder. Prosecutors say he violated rules of engagement. But Maynulet says he had more important priorities on the mission than saving the Iraqi man.

A six-member panel -- the equivalent of a civilian jury -- is hearing the case.

This one must be giving the libs fits. Which has priority for them: hating the miiitary and all that they do, or justifying "mercy killing"?

The left should hail him as a hero - a demigod on the level of Michael Schiavo.

If only he had starved the guy to death.

Sounds like he was more humane than the death doctors, Terri's former husband, and the men in black robes who are executing Terri Shindler.

This has nothing to do with Terri Schiavo. The Iraqi fighter was dying a horrible death and had no chance of getting medical attention in time that could have saved him. You can agree or disagree with the soldier's actions, but to compare his motives to Michael Schiavo is unsupportable.

They gave Kerry a Silver Star for doing the same thing. Only he had to chase his guy down and shoot him in the back.

I'm not comparing his motives - the soldier thought he was doing the guy a favor, Michael Schiavo's trying to get his hands on an insurance settlement.

My point is that the left defends filth like Schiavo to the hilt, but they'll probably call this soldier a war criminal.

Kerry did the same thing, except he killed a wounded, half-naked, frightened VC teenager who probably could have survived his wounds . . . . . if Kerry hadn't "honorably" dispatched him, that is.

In fact, Kerry thought he was so brave to kill that kid, he even gave himself a medal for it.

So, why is this guy in Wiesbaden on trial for "honorably" killing a badly wounded Iraqi?

This sounds like a very difficult defense.

Actually he invented his own medal for that event. It was a Silver Star with a V cluster. It was such a great event that no medal was available to honor such a heroic deed!

There is nothing "inhumane" by letting Terri die of natual cases. In case you didn't know, death by starvation isn't painful. Not to mention the FACT that Terri has no awareness of ANYTHING. No brain.

The elderly die that way every day at their lifes end. It's a peaceful way to go, much better than having cancer eat you alive. My wife works in a old age home, plus I volunteer alot of time to these places, visit these old people and keep them company and have seen many people die this way, on average 2 a week. Now I know you are goingt to say "but they are giving her morphine". That is protocol, they always give the dying morphine, regardless if they are feeling pain or not. it helps them pass quicker by slowing the heart, dropping blood preasure, slowing the breathing. Terri can't feel pain. She has no sense of awareness, She doesn't even know she's still alive or rather her body is alive.

I don't agree with her being forced to an earlier death when her parents have the right to keep her alive, but lets not add false rumor of pain and torture to this. It simply is not true. It is actualy a humaine way. breaking news FYI, Terri's parents have won a new hearing, so her tube may be put back in at any moment.

A soldier's job is to destroy the enemy. I doubt that the enemy would have done otherwise. Screw the rules of engagement.

If this is how we treat our combat soldiers, no one should wonder why last month's recruiting quota was off.

I (or you) weren't there so I won't criticize him for what he did, BUT "screw the rules of engagement", NO! That is unless you think sinking down to the level of the terrorists is a good thing.

In case you didn't know, death by starvation isn't painful.

I've come to the conclusion that you are stark, staring mad.

The pain and agony of death by starvation is obvious to many doctors and observers but for Kate Adamson, she got to experience it first hand. Kate was 33 when she had an incapacitating stroke that left her in a persistent vegetative state. She was much less responsive the Terri is today and had to be fed through a tube inserted into her stomach. When she developed a bowel obstruction her feeding tube was removed for 8-days so that it could be operated on. Kate recovered through rehabilitation the ability to talk and interact and offered her view of the 8-days without food or water:

“When the feeding tube was turned off for eight days, I thought I was going insane. I was screaming out in my mind, "Don't you know I need to eat?" And even up until that point, I had been having a bagful of Ensure as my nourishment that was going through the feeding tube. At that point, it sounded pretty good. I just wanted something. The fact that I had nothing, the hunger pains overrode every thought I had. “

At first I thought Nuzcruizer was Nutcruizer. I also thought he was being sarcastic, until I read all his post. After reading yours, I prayed that Terri's pain would not be as bad as Mrs. Adamson's.

There is nothing "inhumane" by letting Terri die of natu[r]al ca[u]ses.

Everybody is slowly dying of natural causes. Everybody will, unless they are first killed by some other means. You should hope that you will someday die of natural causes, not of starvation and dehydration. They are mutually exclusive, as evidenced by the fact that you have had food and drink today.

Not to mention the FACT that Terri has no awareness of ANYTHING. No brain.

I would be curious to know exactly how you know for certain what Terri's de se state of consciousness is. Do you have access to her private state of mind?

Those who cannot or will not see that starving someone to death is not a good are simply morally handicapped. You have inadvertently demonstrated in your statements above that there is no rational justification to allow blindness to call into question what we see clearly.

Cordially,
