Terri Schiavo's 2002 CT scan
MSNBC ^ | 3 29 05 | msnbc dan abrams interview

Posted on 03/29/2005 9:45:05 PM PST by flixxx

TRANSCRIPT Updated: 4:04 p.m. ET March 29, 2005 The overwhelming majority in the medical community say Terri Schiavo has close to no brain activity and has no chance of regaining awareness. Dr. Ronald Cranford, who actually examined Terri Schiavo in 2002 and testified to her condition, joined "The Abrams Report" on Monday. Cranford is the assistant chief of neurology at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis as well as a faculty member at the University of Minnesota's Center for Bioethics. Below is the transcript of their conversation.

DAN ABRAMS, HOST: You're one of the few people who has actually examined Terri Schiavo and you're hearing all of these people who are coming on from the sidelines saying, "She's has been misdiagnosed," et cetera. How confident are you in your diagnosis and why?

DR. RONALD CRANFORD, UNIV. OF MN NEUROLOGIST: I'm extremely confident. I think at the time of the trial in 2002 there had been eight neurologists who examined her. And of those eight neurologists total, seven of them said beyond any doubt whatsoever Terri is in a vegetative state. Her CT scan shows severe atrophy or shrinkage of the brain. Her EEG is flat and there's absolutely no doubt that she's been in a permanent vegetative state ever since 1990. There's no doubt whatsoever, Dan.

Feeding as experimentation! That's rich!

If the mothers who came before Solomom were to come before Judge Greer, he'd chop the baby in half even if both mothers objected.

In this case, one side is claiming Terri can't take food by mouth, and the other is claiming that she might be able to. It would be illegal to starve her if she could take food by mouth. It would seem that letting someone who wants her to live attempt to feed her by mouth would be a clear and obvious way to solve the factual debate. It shouldn't take the wisdom of Solomon to figure it out.

I'm sorry, but you are in error. A feeding tube is extraordinary life support. It is on equal grounds with a ventilator.

You may be correct legally, and I only admit that because I've heard the Supreme Court may have ruled that at one point. I'm not sure if this is the case or, if so, what the specifics were.

I certainly don't think it should be, especially in a case like this.

In any event, there are reports that Terri would otherwise be able to take nourishment orally.

At least you didn't call him Shirley.

Sriously though, I think that both have approximately the same percentage of the brain "blacked out" which I assume means no activity. I assume that's what we're supposed to be struck by.

Believe it or not, I agree with much of what you wrote.

Moreover, if the parents were so sure Terri could eat on her own, why didn't they just try and not wait for anybody to give them permission.

Michael will not allow them near Terri with anything that could hold water. How are they supposed to try feeding Terri if Michael physically stops them from doing so?

Terri Did Not Suffer Her Brain Damage Outside The Hospital--It Occurred While She Was Hospitalized

Oh, I guess that period of time when she DIED and was resucitated has nothing to do with the severe brain damage suffered.

I never claimed that the scan was the only thing to base a diagnosis of PVS on.

As far as that comment about me being in favor of executing the brain damaged, that is a stupid thing to say.

It is an attempt to bait me and it won't work.

She failed three swallow tests. It was recommended that she not be tested again due to the severity of her injuries. Brain matter doesn't grow back. There isn't any chance of improvement.

Uh huh. He has been guarding the door for 12 years and the parents have not seen Terri without this menacing Michael character frisking them each time they came to see their daughter. This case has been going on for years with the object to remove her tube. They could have ended this if she were able to swallow food. But alas, the parents didn't want to choke their kid.

A lot of people on this board have just simply lost their grip on reality.

I've read the propaganda. False hopes and junk science aren't going to help Terri. She died 15 years ago but they brought her body back. They can't bring her brain back.

"Though the Florida Legislature declared it to be so in 1999, it was not so at the time Terri made her remarks.."

Really good argument supercat, and what you wrote afterward was showed excellent logic. In a perfect world, that's the way that judges would be expected to reason. Trouble is that reason and truth mean nothing today, only their own agendas.

I'm for giving a patient the benefit of the doubt. Terri has been in that state for 15 years though and there hasn't been any improvement.

The family has nothing to convince the court that she can make any sort of recovery.

They have lost every single case they have brought forth.

They don't give her oral feeding and hydration because her legal next of kin says she wouldn't want to lie like that.

Regardless of what we all think of Michael Schiavo, it is still his legal right to make these decisions.

"I think people are missing the point - even if Terri's brain function was minimal, it is not terminal, meaning, without artificial life support, she would not die. She merely requires the necessities we all require in order to live as long as the rest of us."

Excellent post, MadIvan. It is nice to see a reasonable voice in the sea of insanity.

Remember when premature babies were just left to die, with no effort to save them. It was useless to save something that had no chance, so people thought. Now we have wonderful healthy children where once we would have had a funeral.

Terri can still possibly teach us something. Maybe something wonderful to give life to someone else who wouldn`t have been able to in the past. Maybe she could be that person who defies the odds and shows us that the doctors were wrong.

I will always try to look at what life can teach us. Killing her doesn`t teach us anything. It only shows us at how little we have come.

She failed three swallow tests.

When? Was this recent or years ago? What injuries? With liquids or solids? She certainly can swallow liquids otherwise she'd be constantly drooling. In any event, food and water are NOT medicines. They are basic needs of every human being.

Brain matter doesn't grow back. There isn't any chance of improvement.

I'm aware of that. See my post #100.

Thanks for taking the time to post that link, but that isn't the most reliable source out there.

Have you looked at the links on freeper Trinity_Tx's homepage?

I suggest you do. You might be surprised at what's there.
