I imagine some of the best Sgts the US Military has had weren't much liked by the men in their charge. As long as those men made it home, the Sarge was doing his job.
Looks like Sgt. Smith did his in spades. God Bless him and his family.

My biggest fear as an NCO was realized when I lost one of my men. To this day I mourn him. I lost a son to cancer years ago and the pain of that is no greater than feeling the life of one of the men in my charge slowly extinguish itself in my arms.

Soldiers remember the rants, the drills and hoops their Sergeants put them through. But when the chips are down, they will also learn that their life means more to Sarge than his own.
