Mar. 29, 2005 - First lady Laura Bush said Tuesday the government was right to have intervened in the case of Terri Schiavo, a severely brain-damaged Florida woman whose case has stirred national debate about life and death issues.
"I just feel like the federal government has to be involved," Mrs. Bush said. "It is a life issue that really does require government to be involved."
Mrs. Bush commented on the Schiavo case aboard a plane bound for Afghanistan, where she was to promote education and women's rights.
Schiavo's husband, Michael, has waged a long court battle with his parents-in-law, contending his 41-year-old wife, who has been in a persistent vegetative state since 1990, would not want to live that way. Schiavo's parents, on the other hand, have been pleading with the U.S. Congress, Florida lawmakers, federal judges and in courts in Florida to have their daughter's feeding tube reinserted.
"I am not surprised over the debate," Mrs. Bush said. "I think it's an issue that, you know, everyone is concerned about and interested in.
"I'm sorry for the family that it has to be so public. This is such a very, very difficult time for them and for everyone who watches Terri."
Mrs. Bush said she has been encouraged to hear that the case has prompted more people to inquire about living wills.
"I think that is really good," she said. "The president and I have living wills and, of course, our parents do. They wanted us always to be aware of it. I think that it is important for families to have opportunities to talk about these issues."
The perfect spokesperson.
And she cuts Hillary and Co. off at the knees. I mean nobody knows where Hillary is on Terri Schiavo. She went into hiding.
Never forget! Jeb Bush was the last man to turn his back on Terri in her greatest time of need . . . and he walked away. Never forget.
Nope. Should I?
Have you ever listened to Jay Seculow???
Nope. Should I?
Do you know who he is???
Again, you are wrong.
They moved Jurisdiction. That altered everything, though Terri was still sentenced to Death.
They made the first move to asserting their constitutional rights over the Courts. That is going to have repercussions. Positive or negative is dependant on whether public opinion has scared them off from further proper exercise of power.
It moved the debate from a heightened issue to a national debate. One that will not end with Terri. That will have repercussions, I intend to use my voice (one of only many) to make attempt to make that change a positive one that favors life.
Here is a thought that I hope will be considered even by those who agree that Jeb and W have done all that they could within the law.
Michael Schiavo last week invited both the President and the Governor to visit his wife. I think they should go.
And bring her water.
Some argue that the Governor would be dangerously disrupting the balance of powers between the branches of government if he took executive action. Arresting him for bringing water would be such a breech as well, but it would be by those serving the court.
Fifty have already been arrested trying to bring Terri water. Go, Mr President. Go, Governor. Bring her water. And bring your wives along, too.
Jesse's only in it for the publicity.
One more example of how the hysteria over this has the right eating their own......how sad.
I've had enough of you, Saundra. You were once a sterling representative of this website.
Now, you advocate wholesale lawbreaking by public officials.
You don't have a clue what kind of precedent your wild-eyed blathering would set.
If you want to support the goofy Constamatooshinalists, go right ahead.
But you are now marginalized in serious debate.
The fanatics here should stop being so emotional and try,for a change, to use their brains! What you want the president and governor to do is childish and stupid beyond reason. It would NOT help Terri, but WOULD hurt the president, the governor, all of the GOP, the Conservative Movement and us.
I don't want anyone who thinks that Jeb Bush didn't do all that he could to be involved in my life, in any way, shape, manner or form.
Lot of good the government's involvement did.
Yes, I guess I am a fanatic about some things, and I suspect you are, too. In this case, I simply do not accept that any court in this land has the standing or authority to order the arrest of any person for giving a drink of water to any other person. That is clearly an unlawful order by the court.
I also do not believe that the police on site would arrest either one of them.
What are the Terribots going to talk about after this?
I share your concern for FR....I don't recognize it our my friends anymore...
LOL, ya think? The Lord works in mysteriuos ways doesn't he. Yall calling for Terri death are getting to be a very small club. With zero consrvatives of note in it. How does it feel to shown horribly wrong on the webs most popular conservative site?
The guy backed down from a circuit court judge. His political career is over. Nobody votes for wimps. By the end of this week he will have likely let an innocent woman die and marginalized himself amongst his conservative base.
