Much to the chagrin of many of its users, TiVo has begun testing out a new form of advertising on its subscription digital video recorder service. The ads were designed to appear on the screen while a user is fast-forwarding through commercials, but some TiVo customers say ads are popping up during TV shows.

I think if they gave the service for free, then i would take the popups.. but for the service fee there should never be popup ads... Maybe firefox can come out with a Firefox version of Tivo :)

C|Net ^ | March 28, 2005 | Richard Shim TiVo began testing interactive advertising tools during the weekend as it looks to appease companies wary of users' ability to skip over ads. The company confirmed late Monday that it released the first in a series of advertising features to a random and limited number of subscribers to the digital-video recorder service. The first test feature--a tag--pops up on the screen when a viewer is fast-forwarding through an advertisement. If viewers press the thumbs-up or select button during the half second the tag is displayed, they will be redirected to a menu that leads to more information about the advertised...

Mr. TiVo? Meet Mr. Sledgehammer. He's helping Mr. VCR ease back into his old job.
Yours.

This isn't internet ads - it's pop up ads while watching stuff you've recorded on TiVo...

ReplayTV tried the same stuff a while back. The popup ads were enabled via a software update with no advance warning. The howls of protest eventually made 'em remove that bit of software, but now the new version of ReplayTV has firmware that blocks the "Commercial Advance" feature. No more popups if you use the manual 30-second advance button, though.
If they put that garbage back on my RTV, I'm going to switch to a home-built home theater PC/PVR.

If they kill that (30 second skip) I'll be really upset. Otherwise I rarely use the regular fast forward.

What is actually worse is that even when you delete channels on your DirecTV TIVO so you don't have to surf past them to get to the good ones, TIVO reinserts them into your lineup. Now, considering that there are almost 1000 channels on DirecTV, this is a major pain in the butt. They keep reinserting all of the shopping channels, porn and some gay channel. I delete it and the next morning it comes right back up again.
They claim 'it must be a software bug' but it only seems to work with channels which sell something or you have to pay for. Neither of which I am remotely interested in.

I've never had my DirecTV TIVO (Hughes DVR40) bring back channels I didn't want. You need to select Favorites on the setup menu.

I get pissed when some business protests, "It's just capitalism." when he wouldn't know commercialism as a curse, an anathema, if it came in his mouth. Fugg 'em. I'm a conservative and ready to damn the GOP as commercialists.
