Rev. Jesse Jackson said Tuesday afternoon that he has persuaded two Florida state senators to change their votes on a bill to save Terri Schiavo, leaving the measure just one vote shy of the majority necessary for passage.
"Two of them have committed to meeting with Gov. Jeb Bush. They say that they're flexible if they can find acceptable emergency language," Jackson told ABC Radio host Sean Hannity.
Targeting members of the state senate's black caucus in a bid to save Schiavo, Jackson explained: "While we didn't have the specific language today, if I could just get them to shift their will to do whatever [we can] within the law to help her live, that would be a victory."
"They've made that commitment," the civil rights leader added. "I hope it turns into something concrete, signed by morningtime."
Asked if he thought he'd convert the additional vote that would guarantee passage, Jackson said: "If we get two - with the help of Gov. Jeb Bush, we can get three. . . If I was able to persuade two - if he could persuade one, we can change that vote."
The top Democrat said he had contacted the governor's office and was awaiting a return call, saying, "I hope that he will call me and I hope to share with him my position."
Jackson said he would return to Florida tomorrow if he determines it is "the best, most effective way" to save Schiavo.
"I will fly to Tallahassee or Washington or anyplace," he said.
They know, contrary to what bogus media-driven polls say, that most Americans don't like this and don't approve of what's happening.
Damage control, you see.
I'm aFRaid it may be too late fer poor Terri...MUD
FReepers who welcome Jackson's involvement are thinking with their hearts, not their heads.
Yes. Somehow law and mercy seem to go well together.
You're right -- we should not give up. I am just pointing out that Jackson's involvement is VERY PROBABLY too late, and that this extreme lateness is one of the many reasons to have grave doubts about his sincerity.
Hey, toss in Al Sharpton if it'll get Terri out of that hospice! |
I thought this was the Florida Legislature not the US. Am I wrong?
Day late, dollar short.
Better idea..make a trade..Al for Terri.
Get the cart and wheel 'em in. (just kidding)
A couple days ago I heard on some news program that both Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton were speaking out against Terri Shiavo being starved/dehydrated. No foolin. If Sharpton and Santorum show up together in Pinellas Park we'll know the earth's tilted on its axis.
Even if we can't save her life, if we can save the TRUTH (i.e. PET scan) it will be a giant step. Autopsy is too late for a PET scan.
Great Idea! Done
I did not hear anything on the news this evening about this. This could be wonderful but they don't have a minute to waste. If it happens, it will be a true miracle.
This is being reported by Newsmax?
I see nothing about this on any other news site or tv.
If there were any truth to this, would not anyone else in the media jump all over this?
"In Christ there is no east or west, in Him no north or south"
" ... possibly getting back to his roots."
There is a slight possibility of this, and it's a good point. I would say this: One, I'll believe it when I see it. Jackson's vast preference for talk over action, for name-calling over hard work, for grossly simplistic emotion over anything resembling thought, are too long-standing to justify anything but cynicism. Two, even if Jackson make a real effort following the outcome of the Schiavo case, I think he has done a lot of damage to his reputation over the past 20 years. It cannot be easily repaired. I suspect that his influence over black politicians and other left-liberals does not extent to substantive issues where they don't agree with him to begin with -- such as right-to-life types of concerns.
I can certainly believe that he might sway a black lawmaker and minister here and there. But we need far more than that if we are to have any chance of reversing the pro-death precedents that are being set.
"Weak" is hardly a word I'd use for either of the brothers Bush. There's nothing weak in respecting the rule of law.
If Jackson can sway some votes, let him. He won't make the Republicans, who have been trying to help Terri all along, look bad by coming in at the last minute and helping to turn some votes the right way.
Pray for a miracle.
I just think so many people really don't know the details of this case. Imagine if all you knew about it was what you heard on the evening news. If more people really understood, more people would care.
I'll second that. If Jackson is able to assist in getting emergency legislation passed more power to him.
You can blame Randall Terry for the ungratefulness.
Not weak, clueless.
OF COURSE all the "legal" advisors are going to say Jeb is boxed in at this point. But that is assuming a courtocracy.
The Constitution offers a second option. If Jeb disobeys the court then he is now at the mercy of, NOT the court, but the legislature. A supermajority is needed to convinct upon impeachment. This particular legislature is no friend of the courts.
