BOSTON (AP) -- The FBI admitted Saturday it accidentally gave classified documents back to the American translator who pleaded guilty to taking them from the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Ahmed Fathy Mehalba, who was released from jail earlier this month, contacted the FBI's Boston office Tuesday after he realized agents had inadvertently given him the compact disc containing the secret files along with his personal property.
Mehalba had the disc in his possession for only a "matter of hours" before the FBI retrieved it, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Ricciuti.
"Someone in the bureau obviously made a serious mistake," Ricciuti said.
Mehalba's lawyer, Michael Andrews, said the FBI's mistake was "very upsetting" to his client.
The FBI's Boston bureau disclosed its error in a press release Saturday.
FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz said the disc wasn't labeled "secret" - as all classified data should be - because prosecutors had to keep it in the same condition as when it was seized from Mehalba.
Authorities haven't said what type of information was stored on the disk, other than it concerns "national defense," said Ricciuti, who prosecuted Mehalba.

What kind of @$%^$@ idjits did the FBI hire?
Someone thought he was Sandy Berger or Whitey Bulger?
They must have recruited those astute agents from the town of Mayberry. It must have taken ten villages to raise those agents responsible for the blunder. NSNR
Sometimes I wonder if FBI stands for Federal Bureau of Incompetence, but that wouldn't be fair, most of them are probably extremely competent and dedicated and cringe at reports like this.
Another Woops
Well, it IS the Boston office.
flying from chi to saltlake with a sen fbi agent working on security for the winter olympics - he stated that they (the feds) needed to change how they profiled suicide bombers... i queried as to what he meant, he replied that they assumed all of these guys were isolated undereducated teen boys on the social fringes.
having to severely refrain from blasting expletives at him, i then asked if he had ever read "the arab mind" or any islamic history (which is full of not only educated, but center of the road muslims doing assasinations and conducting shahada) - well, he hedged...
and these guys are in charge of our home security, whew??!!
that's where you know that someone upstairs has been protecting us more than we know!
Dang. What next?
D'OH!
This is absolute, total nonsense. When you receive classified documents you sign them out. In a book. You enter the document number, brief title, your name, the time, and the date, and you sign it. The classified documents clerk also signs it.
If this process was NOT followed, then the head of the office in question should be immediately fired, along with the security officer. If it WAS followed, the person responsible for signing him out should be fired.
Some vague "someone" didn't do this, and head must roll Not that I'll hold my breath. The FBI has really gone down the tubes, and Sessions is incapable of fixing it.
"Osama? Reward? Nah . . . ."
No one ever said the best and the brightest were working for the US Government.
But there are suggestions that covert spies out to destroy our country are.
Figure out which we hired - the stupid or the evil?
Yup. That's it!
"Errrrrrrrr aaghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"
'It takes a Village Idiot"!
That's a lot of files for Berger to stuff in his underwear. He hid the rest in his cheeks.
So it did. NSNR
