Strangely enough this reminds me of a conversation I had over the weekend about sex with a fat woman.

They say it's a lot like riding a Moped - It's a hell of a lot of fun, but you wouldn't want your friends to see you.

"Fox News calling this 'definitely a thrust event.'"

Strangely enough this reminds me of a conversation I had over the weekend about sex with a fat woman. The physics are the same.

As opposed to a "slip fault", which is you accidentally telling your wife about having sex with a fat woman? ;)

Seriously, prayers for all those affected by this event.

Just talked to some friends in Medan, the major city of Sumatra. Power was knocked out, but it now getting back on-line. No major damage in that city. But it's a long ways from north Aceh. The northen coastline probably took the brunt of the damage again.

The good news is that it happened at about 11 PM there, so hopefully there were far less people at the beach.

That means they may not have heard the news and they'll all be asleep when it arrives. Not good.

But the idea that there's a clear and obvious moon relationship for large quakes is a crock; it's easily checkable and there really is nothing that jumps out;

As I noted, I've always found that surprising - but you can't argue with the facts.

Earthquakes aren't a point. They happen along a "plane"...a surface between fault faces.

An epicenter just shows where a rupture BEGINS...it moves along the fault like a zipper.

The epicenter of the December quake was at the south end of the rupture zone..the area where the fault moved....which was over 600 miles long.

The epicenter of this quake was actually south of the December rupture zone; if the rupture started there and moved SOUTH, this isn't really an "Aftershock" of the December quake, but a new quake (likely stress-triggered by the Dec. quake though.)

I'm looking for a good graphic of the rupture zones of 2004, 1861, and 1833..(all big subduction quakes off of Sumatra.)

I have lots of friends in Phuket, I scuba dive there all the time, I have been there just before the tsunami, and have been there since then. Its a great place full of wonderful people, and it also serves as a liberty port for our armed services.

Why did you ask the question in the first place? How is it germane to the subject? They also are having a huge soccer tournament there on the beach this month, that is not germane to the subject either.

more about the tsunami threat:
Tsunami fear as earthquake strikes off Sumatra
Reuters
Mon Mar 28, 2005 6:26 PM GMT
A spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey told CNN that the earthquake could cause tsunamis. "Certainly evacuations should be occurring. I hope they are," spokesman Don Blakeman said, saying of the earthquake that "it could also cause some local tsunami activity. Even if we do see tsunami activity it won't be as widespread" as December's quake.

A big proponent of the idea is a popular kook forecaster (Who is unfortunately a real geologist), Jim Berkland of syzyjob.net.

I know we are just past the Full Moon. I know there was a Full Moon during the Good Friday quake in Alaska in 1964 as well as the 9.0 that hit the same place on December 26th, of last year (2004).
