Supervisors accuse harbor officials of seeking the closure of the Port Hueneme naval installation to acquire facilities for expansion.
*****************
Jockeying over jobs-rich Naval Base Ventura County reached a fever pitch Tuesday, with the Board of Supervisors condemning what it says are behind-the-scenes efforts to have the base added to the Pentagon's closure list, while operators of an adjacent port say they are simply exploring expansion opportunities.

Good friend of mine, has a son stationed at Hueneme. Been hearing about this little tiff for a while. I wonder what our fine Washington gang is going to do when they REALLY NEED these bases??? .. after they are gone.
For your information Ventura County Ping!
This is the first I had heard about it....course I am in Orange County!
Do they still have affordable housing in Ventura county or am I too late?
I wouldn't know.
The local "news"paper, the socialist city planners at the new Cal State Channel Islands University and a left-wing outfit that calls itself the Ventura County Civic Alliance just sponsored a forum to "Keep Ventura County Livable." The Alliance wants to create a "Compact for a Sustainable Ventura County." If you know your socialist "sustainable" code-speak the plan should be clear. Every third word in newspaper stories about it was "diversity" or some variation. It's capsulized in this quote from the Red Star's editorial:
"Encourage communities to develop smarter with mixed-use neighborhoods near transportation links, which include housing for all income levels, ages and family structures to live together in a true community." Socialist central planning. Notice that part about "family structures?"
You are WAY too late. I just sold my house in Dec for 765, now have a home in PA for way less on an acre with a pool. Before 2001 would have been a good time..
Thanks for keeping me on the list!
That person may have bought a house for half as much in PA, but he'll pay a small fortune forever to heat and air condition it. And shovel and swat all year! I read about the port using the base recently in the local newspaper. I don't remember anything set in stone. In fact, I remember feeling like it was a lot of name-calling, and back-biting, but little in the way of decision-making.
that's not a large base.
I am very suspicious of these miltary base dealings.
I have been reading about the strange dealings going on on OC over the old El Toro Marine Air Base in Irvine. There was talk about another commuter airport down there. The residents said no because to would cause too much noise and traffic.
Result: 97% of the land will be made into housing high rent, very few can afford it. (Isn't that more traffic and noise from that? A 1 billion $$ "bonanza" for the housing company.) 2% for small business and 1% for a park open space.
I wish these large tracts of public land were either kept for govt. use or better used for EVERYONE'S benefit.
I am reminded of the same shell game problem with Fort Ord in Monterrey county and SF's Presidio.
All given to the developer's bulldozers for a soft deal and a song.
