It's been five days since Terri Shiavo's feeding tubes were pulled at the request of her husband and the action backed at various judicial levels. The Florida Senate, Congress, and even the President, have gotten involved in an issue that has been described as a right-to-die issue, a states right issue, and even a custodial rights issue.
I have to admit that emotionally, I've been all over the board on my feelings on all of this, continuing to flip-flop on where I stand while the drama continues to play out. I find it particularly interesting, however, that Michael Shiavo, her husband, in what has to be described as in name only, actually began fighting to end his wife's life in 1998, when he suddenly declared eight years after she collapsed, that he could recall his wife earlier stating that she wouldn't want a feeding tube used to keep her alive if the situation ever arose. His recollection took place six years after he received a settlement for $1 million in 1992 to care for his wife for the rest of her natural life, $300,000 of which went to Michael for personal compensation. In the meantime, he's taken a common-law wife and fathered two children with her. Trying to stay above the emotional issues, I find his having it both ways approach discomforting.

would we, as the posters on FR? I hope not...
but dogs get starved and beaten to death all the time. My Husky was a rescued dog and she still cowers from time to time when I go to pet her.
Isn't a life insurance policy involved, too?
Yesterday I noted, if they said she is not aware and suffers no pain, then how can ending her life be "ending her suffering", since she evidently doesn't suffer anyway.
Another thing this article brings out, they'd have Animal Cops at your door, even if you were starving a terminally ill animal.
We had a dog who the vet pronounced terminal, but my husband brought him home to die, rather than have him euthanised or leave him at the vet for treatment (the dog was scared to death of the vet).
We offered him syringes of water, and a toothpaste like gel that contained nutrients, as he lay on the floor for weeks. The dog got better, but that is not the point.
How can Michael Schiavo sit beside his dying wife, "keeping vigil", as they say, and still withhold hydration and nourishment from her. We wouldn't have let our dog lie there without at least trying to get him to eat and drink. It is shameful.
I want to see what happens when all future death row executions are carried out by forced dehydration and starvation.
I cannot believe grown people with a straight face are sitting there on television listening to other grown people expound on how starvation and dehydration aren't painful and tortuous but euphoric and peaceful. I feel like I'm in Alice in Wonderland.
Why aren't women's groups and disabled groups featured on the news 24/7? Because there is a deliberate attempt to shape our opinions by the media. The fix is in.
and he should be....
I want to rip the head off of the *****'n guy myself....
Me, too.
And the thought also struck me this morning - if my dog had a stroke, and I just allowed it to lie there and starve to death, the same system of "justice" that's starving a human being to death in Florida would happily (and rightfully) throw my ass in jail.
And God forbid any babies get sick that the parents just happen to not want anymore. I guess it'll be okay to starve THEM to death too - Um, I mean "allow them to die."
I guess it's just jarring to realize that a good portion of your fellow Americans evidently have no heart, no soul, and no humanity - because I'm NOT willing to give their "position" the respect of even considering it an "alternate point of view."
Because if he didn't, someone would give her food and water; then she wouldn't die.
Well, folks....we now have our talking points for the next inevitable famine crisis that hits Africa, don't we? When Bush the Spender lobbies for gazillions in aid to help the starving we'll just have to resurrect the Shiavo tapes and play the clips describing the starvation/dydration experience as euphoria and bliss.
Don't hold your breath SpyGuy........in case you didn't hear this, our "wonderful" court system here in Texas just stayed a murederers' execution based on what the jury heard during either the trial or punishment phase of his trial. This murder was years ago, but this jerk gets a second chance.............so ironic isn't it? You think maybe the Schiavo case might be, and I hope it is, the catylist for doing that very thing?
Although Mikey claims attendance at Terri's bedside, it is not 24/7. He has other obligations for conjugal visits at the other address and he absolutely has to eat the juicy steak that the other spouse has prepared for him. He must really be a torn man to have to divide his time so gallantly???????
BTW, wasn't this the same guy who asked nurses, 'when is the bitch going to die'???????
It is hard to believe that money is a major motive here, as Michael turned down an offer of $1,000,000 to turn custody of Teri over to her parents.
"We wouldn't treat a dog this way, would we?"
It's been five days since Terri Shiavo's feeding tubes were pulled.....
Usually when a dog's brain ceases to function, 'we' don't insert a feeding tube at all.
Where's the mercy in that?
Lousy comparison
It could be a catalyst if and probably only if Terri's remains and her medical records are not destroyed as they've been ordered to be after her death. A full autophsy need to be conducted, plus a full review of her care over the past 15 years to see if the goverment did what it was supposed to do as far as protect her as a vulnerable citizen.
Doesn't sound like that will happen either since no one is willing to put their rears on the line now to stop her from being starved, why would they do anything more when the inevitable happens?
No, we would not let a dog or cat suffer as this woman is having to suffer
We wouldn't euthanize an otherwise healthy dog, either.
