Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo was not to be removed from her hospice, a team of state agents were en route to seize her and have her feeding tube reinserted -- but they stopped short when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order, The Herald has learned.
Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told police in Pinellas Park, the small town where Schiavo lies at Hospice Woodside, on Thursday that they were on the way to take her to a hospital to resume her feeding.
For a brief period, local police, who have officers at the hospice to keep protesters out, prepared for what sources called ``a showdown.''
In the end, the squad from the FDLE and the Department of Children & Families backed down, apparently concerned about confronting local police outside the hospice.
''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police.
''The FDLE called to say they were en route to the scene,'' said an official with the city police who requested anonymity. ``When the sheriff's department and our department told them they could not enforce their order, they backed off.''
The incident, known only to a few and related to The Herald by three different sources involved in Thursday's events, underscores the intense emotion and murky legal terrain that the Schiavo case has created. It also shows that agencies answering directly to Gov. Jeb Bush had planned to use a wrinkle in Florida law that would have allowed them to legally get around the judge's order. The exception in the law allows public agencies to freeze a judge's order whenever an agency appeals it.

A feeding tube is not any different than a wheel chair or a cane just a tool to use to live..
Terri is being killed because at the moment..and largely thanks to her being deprived of therapy..she cannot raise her hand to her mouth..
The M.D. in charge said he gave her morphine to ease her pain...(and of course hasten her death before she could be rescued)..
When what she really needed to "ease' her pain is a drink of water..her pain is caused by thrist...she doesnt need morphine she needs water...
A most foul act of murder by those who claim to protect and serve...they serve ghouls and murderers..
They will have no problem breaking into homes to steal when the judge says they can...or do anything their judge tells them they can do.. to anyone.. anytime.. anywhere..
imo
President Bush is very quiet last few days about all this, looks like the Bush Brothers are backing down from their John Wayne cowboy image.
IF the President sends in Delta &/or Sp.F, No problems!
The Nation must be saved at ALL COST!, and let's not forget . We are at war with Terror and EVIL am I right ?
Evil comes in all faces, and if don't win this test from GOD it's over anyway. Looking at the Big pic
Then they would have to escalate to something really fearsome - a UN Security Council Resolution. < /sarcasm>.
Maybe that's the whole problem here, the other side won't back down, but the conservative side will.
Don't take this too personally but: bullshit
Who do you reckon would have been the 'combatants'? State cops unloading on county cops?
Give me a friggin' break...
He let 'em back off thinking to save his political ass.
I'm not one of the religious wingnuts around here,
but this entire mess is a ghoulish, criminal, and shameful shameful abomination.
The problem was that they publicly announced their intentions. Act 1, then deal with it from there was what should have been done. Too much talk spoiled this plan.
I'd vote for him in a heartbeat. Governor Bush is a law abiding citizen. Do you fault him for that?
This man has done EVERYTHING in his power (within the law) to save Terri. He doens't want a bloodbath. Read the article, and put your frustrations and blame where it belongs.
And that would be with Terri's "husband", Judge Greer, and his thugs and co-horts in Florida.
the cops do not work for Christ.....they work for the city and taxpayer.....you start to sound like those so called religious fanatics when you invoke Christ to circumvent the law.....
"Randall Terry just said live on Foxnews that Jeb was on his way over this morning to get Terri with a team of people, and were told by Greer that if he attempts to take custody of Terri there will be police force stopping you. He said at that point Jeb BLINKED!! he got SCARED! 3/24/05"
Now Jeb really shows himself as a complete impotent fool. My take is that he deserves the shame.
I agree, but let them stew in their impotence.
At this point I'm beginning to connect the hate shown to Jeb, Bush and the Reps to be equal to the hate shown against Terri. Both without merit, both fanned by the same malicious spirit that would love nothing better than an innocent woman dying and a party that has stood for Life and Liberty be brought down.
If they were interested in doing anything but spewing hate they would stop the blame game. Begin engaging the culture. Educating folks about the Judiciary and Constitution. Informing about sanctity of Life. And support the only politicians that had the courage to stand for that life.
Instead they advocate we abandon those politicians, allow the pro-Death politicians entrance, disengage as what was done after R.v.W. and maybe 40 years later return to bemoan the fact a redhead was sentenced to death by the Judiciary because her hair flamed too brightly, conveniently ignoring their own responsibility for the event.
The state police work for the Governor.
It's as I suspected.
There might have been bloodshed, so the decision was made not to go in.
There's a thought!
Yep - I've been thinking for days how much we miss John Wayne. What do you think Reagan would have done?
so true
you are not getting it.......the cops are not working on orders to follow their personal beliefs.....can't you give them some credit, they have to enforce the law, not their convictions or whims......if that was the case, they could look the other way when their brother in law broke into your house
