Schiavo father: 'Down to her last hours'
CNN ^ | March 25, 2005

Posted on 03/25/2005 10:26:51 AM PST by RWR8189

PINELLAS PARK, Florida (CNN) -- The father of Terri Schiavo, the severely brain-damaged woman whose feeding tube was removed a week ago, said Friday his daughter is "down to her last hours."

Bob Schindler, Schiavo's father, said, "Terri is weakening. ... Something has to be done, and has to be done quick."

Schindler said the family's hopes lie with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, Georgia, which is hearing -- for the second time this week -- an appeal claiming Schiavo's due process rights have been violated.

Schiavo is in her seventh day without food or water since Pinellas County Circuit Judge George Greer ordered the tube removed for the third time.

The case is again in the federal appeals court, where a three-judge panel will rule on the motion filed by attorneys for Schiavo's parents.

My dear cajun girl. You are a soft voice in the wilderness serenely stating the nice elements performed by many good folks in the country.

Humanity is not preserved by the niceties it performs for the many; it is judged by the willfulness to kill a few.

In this case, it is self-evident the State has by judicial fiat sentenced a disabled woman to a brutal death.

You know, I've been wondering -- let's just say for the sake of argument, that Michael Shiavo DROPPED DEAD right this minute. What would happen then? Does custody of Terri revert automatically to her parents? Or does der fuerher Greer then get to say, "well, the late guardian's wishes must be respected and carried out, he knew best!"

That's funny, the healthcare professionals I talk to say the opposite. That families insist on extensive, even invasive procedures to extend the life of their loved ones even when they are in multiple organ failure, etc. They refuse DNS orders on very sick elderly patients who then end up with a chest full of broken bones when CPR is administered. They refuse to believe their loved ones are going to die, and they are bleeding this country of precious resources.

"I did not realize until the past few days how much we are all hostage to the whim of the judiciary."

Right. I'm never going to get an abortion or marry a lesbian, but I'll quite likely get old and burdensome before I die.

She herself mentioned that she was surprised that she had such a voice. What a gift! Often happens that we can't handle the rest of it when the gift is so powerful.

What a coincidence. The law describing Feeding Tubes as artificial life support was also changed in the late 90's by a friend of Judge Greer.

The amount of ignorance and hate in this thread is appalling. Comparing 100% consistent judicial decisions (that, by the way, have been upheald on by some very conservative judges) to Nazism and genocide is obsurd.

The Nazi judges consistently ruled that what was done there and then was "lawful" at the time.

Why don't you do her a favor and butt out of her life.

By all means, let's leave her and Judge Greer in peace as he smothers her with his legal ruling.

No one's blaming Terri for her situation, least of all me. Her husband is a scumbag and a liar, in my opinion, and what is happening to her is heartbreaking and immoral. I certainly don't fault her for not signing a living will. Who thinks of that while she's young and healthy? But because she didn't, he's able to get what he wants, however disgusting his wishes.

I do not disagree that this woman should not be in the postion she is in. I hate every moment of it. But I do think a culture is judged by what ones sees of its deepest values. And this country values life and supports that which makes life good.

This case is a sensation because it is quite the opposite of what we are. And that is a good, decent, people.

The doctor comment came out of left field. There is NO evidence there has been any malfeasance on the part of any doctors in this case. The doctors are not arguing to the court to make her die, are they? Why don't we just stick to the facts and not slander an entire profession because you disagree with their diagnoses.
