Good Signs In Iraq
Washington Times ^ | March 25, 2005

These are not the best of times for Saddam loyalists, jihadists, common criminals and associates of Abu Musab Zarqawi who comprise the insurgency that has terrorized the Iraqi people for almost two years. Iraq's soldiers and private citizens are fighting back. The first major blow against the insurgents came as a result of the Jan. 30 elections, in which millions of Iraqis defied the terrorists and went to the polls to begin the process of writing a new constitution and electing a government. The second damaging development is the fact that Iraqis have become much better at defending themselves. During the past few weeks, a spate of news reports have appeared in mainstream media outlets showing that Iraqi military and police forces and armed civilians are beginning to make life miserable for the insurgents. On Monday, the New York Times ran a front-page story, "On Iraq's Street of Fear, the Tide May Be Turning," which showed how Iraqi soldiers in Baghdad have been increasingly successful in combating the insurgents. As a result, the terrorists are finding it increasingly difficult to pin down American troops and hit the Green Zone, headquarters of the Iraqi government, with mortar fire. American officers said that previously, the terrorists had been able to mass in groups as large as 150, pinning American soldiers down for as long as six hours at a time. But that no longer is the case, because the Iraqis have become a much more effective fighting force and are refusing to buckle to the intimidation campaign.

"These are not the best of times for Saddam loyalists"

These are also not the best of times for Democrats.

Michael Moore is deeply saddened.

Speaking of which, whatever happened to this fat slob? It's like he disappeared off the face of the earth last November.

Unfortunately the bad guys got lucky today with that car bomb at the checkpoint that killed 11 ING... that won't stop the Iraqi's from claiming their country back though.

That's redundant. Most Democrats have turned out to be Saddam loyalists.

Yesterday, the liberal-leaning Christian Science Monitor, in an editorial titled "Iraqi Uprising Against Terrorists," said: "As if the Jan. 30 elections in Iraq weren't enough of a message to that nation's insurgents to quit, now come reports of angry private citizens acting to stop a terrorist attack before it began ... When common Iraqis start to actively say 'Enough,' then tolerance for terrorism melts away." We wholeheartedly agree.

Momentum builds. The more Iraqi forces that can take over responsibility for parts of Iraq, the more we can free up resources to train more Iraqi forces. This is not a vicious cycle, but a vicious spiral - vicious to those who would deny freedom to Iraqis.

I have been thinking about this. I think the Iraqi's were afraid to fight before.

Who could blame them, anyone who stood up to Saddam was killed or worse so they had no leaders left. They also grew in a culture of submission. The election told them they they had friends who felt as they did. The constant mindless terrorism forced them to confront their fears. At some point, you kneel or fight. It was a question if that many would fight back. I think we are seeing that they have been pushed long enough and will fight back. This bodes very well for their future and the entire region will benefit.

Most of the operations we hear about now are Iraqi forces taking the lead, with US forces in support and air roles. This allows the Iraqis to gain "ownership" of their own country's security, and starts the process of weaning them off of the US military, allowing us to free up troops to bring home, or to deal with the next crisis (Iran?).

Except that right now the biggest bang we get for our buck is to use those freed up troops to train more Iraqis to make the whole process go a helluva lot quicker.

Thanks for the good news ping. The Iraqi people are learning who their enemies are; arab terrorists from all over the ME, sent by fanatical islamist clerics who supply them with money and drugs and promise them 72 virgins in paradise. The TV broadcasts showing their interrogation, hearing them admit their origins and purpose were a brilliant idea.
Meanwhile, why are there anti-war demonstrations in the US? The war is over. The Iraqi people are fighting the same islamist terrorists as is the rest of the world...so, there's no doubt about whose side the Left is on, is there?
