China won't Intervene if U.S. Attacks N. Korea

[Lee Un-do reporting from Washington D.C.] An official from Chinese Foreign Ministry disclosed on (Mar.) 23rd((U.S.) local time) that China will not intervene militarily (in N. Korea) even if the diplomatic efforts to resolve N. Korean nuclear problem fails and U.S. mounts military attacks on N. Korea.

The official, who are knowledgeable on Sino-American affairs, told this reporter, "The mutual defense treaty between N. Korea and China, signed in 1961, is now subject to different interpretations, due to the passage of time." He went on to emphasize, "China won't send troops to defend N. Korea."

He said, "This view is shared by all policy-makers in Beijing. I think that Pyongyang also know this."

His comment is noteworthy because it implies that the provision of automatic military intervention in 'N. Korea-Chinese Treaty for Mutual Friendship and Assistance', signed on Jul. 11, 1961, is practically dead. Some Chinese scholars said the provision is dead. However, this is the first time an Chinese government official made such a comment.

Nevertheless, he said, "China will continue efforts to protect N. Korea." Asked what such efforts entail, he replied, "Supplying food and energy, discouraging U.S. hard-line policy, diplomatic support at U.N. Security Council."

He went on, "In the long term, China wants unification of both Koreas under mutual agreement, but won't oppose S. Korea absorbing N. Korea. China's top priority is to maintain a stable border."

He added, "China twice lost Taiwan because of its attempt to intervene Korean peninsula. It shouldn't repeat the same mistake again," suggesting that its Korean policy is closely related to its Taiwan policy.

For now, China to N. Korea, "I will keep your lifeline open, but won't help you if Yanks are mad enough to kill you." Seems China steps back a bit, after the recent round of tough diplomatic moves by U.S.. I am sure there are more maneuvers to come. I suspect things are beginning to head in the right direction. Mid-East, S. Korea, Taiwan, and China are to be placed in the right places, before finishing off N. Korea, which can be either overt or covert.

If at first you don't succeed, failure may be your style.

Don't expect to get any 'help' from us on Taiwan. Not that we would anyway, but considering what a lousy, half hearted effort you've made on North Korea, you'd be crazy to think we'd be willing to see that as a fair trade.

In another few months, Iraq will have died down, and the focus will start shifting back to East Asia.

Hmmmm, be careful - this sounds like a dis-information effort by the Chicoms - they state that because of the passage of time, they will turn a blind eye to the destruction of N. Korea; that does not sound like them - the last thing they want is a democratic and unified Korea on their southern border. They are worried because they are increasingly surrounded by democracies.

However, it does sound like a sales pitch to the world (and the libs in the US) that since China is "willing to do that to N. Korea", the US should be willing to abandon Taiwan. China needs to take control of Taiwan before N. Korea implodes becasue when N. Korea implodes, there goes the leverage China needs to take over Taiwan.

Re #8

You raise a good point. It is better for China to make a deal now when N. Korea is still alive and can be a viable bargaining chip. It is a step in a right direction. However, we are not at the destination yet.:)

"All warfare is deception."

I smell a rat here, either a quid pro qou on Taiwan (which I do not believe Bush would do), or a sucker punch. If we have to go in to N. Korea...despite these flowery words, we'd better go in prepared to deal with China as well.

If we move on North Korea, China will move on Taiwan.

We should be moving on North Korea as well as the cancers that are maturing in our own hemisphere.

It's very nice of China to say they won't intervene in a scenario that will never occur. I'm more interested in what China will do in a more realistic possibility, North Korea invades South Korea.

No one is touching NK. They are set to implode on their own.

If China attacks Taiwan, kiss Beiging and most of Chinas manufacturing capabilities goodbye in a retaliatory missile strike. China cannot afford that.
