Deputies: Man tried to steal gun to "rescue Terri Schiavo"

Associated Press

SEMINOLE, Fla. - A man was arrested after trying to steal a weapon from a gun shop so he could "take some action and rescue Terri Schiavo," authorities said.

Michael W. Mitchell, of Rockford, Ill., entered Randall's Firearms Inc. in Seminole just before 6 p.m. Thursday with a box cutter and tried to steal a gun, said Marianne Pasha, a spokeswoman for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Mitchell, 50, told deputies he wanted to "take some action and rescue Terri Schiavo" after he visited the Pinellas Park hospice where she lives, Pasha said.

The feeding tube that has kept Schiavo alive for more than a decade was removed March 18 over objections from her parents. Schiavo's husband has said his wife would not want to be kept alive artificially.

Doctors have said she would probably die within a week or two of the tube being pulled.

Randy McKenzie, the owner of Randall's Firearms, said Mitchell pulled out the box cutter and broke the glass on a couple of display cases.

"He told me if I wasn't on Terri's side then I wasn't on God's side, either," McKenzie told The Associated Press.

McKenzie said he then pointed his own gun at Mitchell and ordered him to lie on the ground. But Mitchell fled out the store's back door before police arrived, he said.

Mitchell was later arrested in a parking lot and was scheduled to appear in court Friday. He was being held on $125,000 bond on charges of attempted armed robbery, aggravated assault and criminal mischief, officials said.

It was not known if he had a lawyer.

Seminole is about 5 miles west of Pinellas Park.

It would take quite a crowd to swamp those police.

If 25 to 50 thousand just walked up, they could do nothing. Make sure that lots of cameras were there too.

Sure we do! Every family has at least one...

My family doesn't have one... uh...
could it be...
Is that why nobody sends a Christmas card...

We all knew this was coming. I'm a bit surprise it's taking this long for the true nut-jobs who lurk in our midsts to go to extremes. Trying to steal a gun, had people using their kids and even a bomb threat. I expect more of the same to come. Until she's buried. Even then, Michael should watch out. I smell wisps of the past abortion clinic murders in the air.

When society casts morality aside and embraces barbarism, the fabric begins to unravel.

Most Americans conduct our daily lives in civility with the underlying assumption our system is just. That no longer is true.

We have moved into a very dark territory of evil where lives are worthless and the weakest among us are throwaways.

We will reap a very bitter harvest for this evil.

Lots of big talk demanding that Jeb Bush ignore judicial orders, but no one else seems to be volunteering for the task.

That's it in a nutshell. It's the end of America as we know it--with the Nazi culture of death descending upon us and whatnot--and everyone's typing away demanding that somebody *else* do something about it. Too bad ALL CAPS can only accomplish so much.

Unbelievable. It is even more unbelievable that we have so many people here who support armed intervention.

Who are those police anyway? Why are they there? How many are they and under whose orders? Any chance whoever's in charge could just send them home? There's certainly no law that requires them to be there.

There are issues worth literally fighting for but this specific case, imho, is not one to "lock-and-load" on.

It's been ajudicated over 15 years and fully in keeping with precidents going back to Reagan's first term. It's a sad case; I feel badly for her parent's unwillingness to accept their daughter's been effectively dead for years.

"Experts" we've heard from on Hannity and other outlets are kooks like the "Nobel Prize-nominated" who is nothing of the sort (a congressman writing a letter means nothing) and was fined by the medical board for not rendering services. The nurse with all the anti-Michael tales has painted a conspiracy so broad it must include Terri's own parents.

People say Michael hasn't allowed any therapy but that simply isn't so. He went so far as to fly her to California and have an experimental implant inserted. Nothing worked. Her cerebral cortex is gone, just a slush of cerebralspinal fluid remains. No electrical activity.

At least, soon, she will finally get to rest in peace.

There are some sane ones here, but this thread could go bad pretty fast.

These Schiavo supporter threads start going bad from the very first post till the last. Barely a rational comment in between. Sad.

Nope, the cops don't have to shoot all of you, just you. (insert name here)

Didn't Gandhi get masses of people to walk up to barricades to recieve blows from the guards? What would the security do if 25,000 people walked up and past them?

Could someone explain:

[from the 'march for justice' page] In October 1998, Free Republic marched on Washington demanding the impeachment of Bill Clinton. Thanks to our efforts, Clinton was impeached less than two months later.

Why aren't the all-powerful FreeRepublic marching to save Terri?

what if he had shot someone? I'm all for trying to save Terri, but the fact that some people (not referring to you) here have advocated violence to save her is reprehensible.
