 ALL five members of a family from hell were kicked out of their home and the surrounding area yesterday after a four-year reign of terror.

Anti-social behaviour orders were issued against the Bridge family — who were banned from entering the Wirral in Merseyside for up to seven years.

John Bridge, 40, his wife Karen, 37, and sons John Jnr, 20, Alan, 18, and Luke, 16, terrorised neighbours in New Brighton, a court heard.

The family had used threatening and violent behaviour, verbal abuse and intimidation.

They also indulged in criminal behaviour — including dangerous driving and organised car crime.

Their thuggery was so bad that Merseyside police created a special unit to target them.

The ASBOs, issued at Birkenhead Magistrates Court, ban John, Karen, John Jnr and Alan from entering the Wirral until September 2012. Luke was banned until March 2009.

The five were also banned from causing harassment, alarm or distress to anyone in England and Wales for the same period.

John Jnr and Alan are both currently in jail for other offences.

Chief Supt Alan Jones said after the ruling: “By standing up against the intimidation of this family, members of the community have helped us reclaim their neighbourhood.”

Caroline Laing, boss of Wirral’s Anti-Social Behaviour Team, added: “Residents were incredibly frightened of reprisals.”

Scots, however, are fair game.

I have to ask it...or what? What happens when they move and start the bad behavior again?

It's unfortunate that the ASBO didn't specify "United Kingdom", only "England and Wales".  Perhaps it's a jurisdictional matter that prevented this?

It seems, however, that this 'family' is unwilling to abide even by the clear rules of this ASBO and continue to create havoc only in their immediate vicinity.   Travelling to Scotland in order to evade the ASBO doesn't seem to be part of their heretofore-demonstrated modus operandi, and so it appears that at least for the moment, Scotland is safe.  :-)

A Google search with the keywords "ASBO Penalties" brought me here:

Together - tackling anti-social behaviour

What are the penalties for breaching the terms of an anti-social behaviour order?

Breaching the terms of an anti-social behaviour order ( ASBO ), without reasonable excuse, is a criminal offence and criminal procedures and criminal penalties apply. Breach of an interim ASBO, a county court ASBO or an anti-social behaviour order on conviction is also a criminal offence and attracts the same penalties.

(Edit)

Guidance for magistrates on how to treat breach of ASBOs

Guidance to magistrates from the Judicial Studies Board advises that: 'breach of an order is a criminal offence and is itself a serious matter. A court should not lapse into treating the breach of an ASBO as just another minor offence. It should be remembered that the order itself would normally have been a culmination of a course of persistent anti-social behaviour. An ASBO will only be seen to be effective if breaches of it are taken seriously. Further breaches of a court order should be treated very seriously and may need to be referred to the Crown Court for more severe sentencing. The sentence should be both proportionate to the seriousness of the breach and importantly reflect the impact of the anti-social behaviour.'

The applicant agency should arrange with the prosecutor to provide the court with information about the context of the breach, including why the order was originally made, the effect of the anti-social behaviour and the breach of the order on the community.

Penalties for breach of an ASBO are:

  • on summary conviction an adult defendant can be sentenced to a maximum of six months imprisonment and/or a fine not exceeding £5000;
  • on indictment (crown court) an adult defendant can be sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison and/or a fine;
  • the courts also have the power to impose community penalties, but not a conditional discharge, for a breach of an anti-social behaviour order;
  • the youth court deals with breaches of ASBOs by young people under the age of 18. The maximum sentence for a breach of an ASBO for a young person is a two-year detention and training order of which 12 months is served in custody, the remainder is served as a community penalty under the supervision of the Youth Offending Team ( YOT );
  • a young person may only be sentenced to a detention and training order if he or she is 15 or over, or is a persistent offender aged between 12 and 14;
  • a minor aged 10-11 cannot be given a term of detention but can receive a community penalty for breach of an ASBO.

Guidance for magistrates' sentencing for breaches of ASBOs is contained in the Magistrates' Court Sentencing Guidelines (pdf 676k) 6th edition, published in January 2004.

Thanks for the info. Hope they get the maximum, but doubt it will solve anything. Once they get out it will be back to behaving badly.

Together - tackling anti-social behaviour

Government announces new guidance on publicising ASBOs (March 2005)

A clear 'yob warning' was sent out by Home Secretary Charles Clarke today, making it clear that anti-social behaviour has serious consequences.

Publishing new guidance encouraging councils to use publicity to help enforce anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs), Mr Clarke made it clear that offenders can expect to have personal details publicised to protect the community. A separate shorter flyer is also available for the general public.

New ASBO figures also published today show rapid take-up of the power, increasing by 20 per cent to nearly 4,000 since they were first introduced in 1999. The Home Secretary also emphasised that ASBOs have teeth; with a prison term the ultimate sanction for breach of an ASBO.

You're welcome  :-)  Although I agree that this 'family' is likely to continue their evil ways, please don't lose heart as it seems that Great Britain's Home Secretary and others are taking these matters seriously.  Please see this FR thread.

icNewcastle - Families given the boot

Families given the boot

Apr 6 2005

By The Evening Chronicle

L-r: Margaret Harold, Mandy Draper & Terrence Emmett

Nightmare neighbours who have made life a misery for law-abiding tenants on Tyneside estates have been given their marching orders.

Northumbria Police joined forces with housing officials for a series of early morning swoops on homes across North Tyneside.

Five nuisance families across North Tyneside have been served with eviction notices while a further 15 received final warnings to clean up their behaviour.

Sgt Don Wade, of Forest Hall police station, who led the raids as part of the Safer Estates initiative, said: "This should serve as a warning to anyone who thinks violent and anti-social behaviour is acceptable.

"It is time to say enough is enough. Law-abiding residents should not have to put up with this."

Margaret Harold (pictured above, left), 48, of Garth 24, Killingworth, was served with an eviction notice following complaints about her and son Derek Ramsey, 30.

On January 1 Ramsey is alleged to have bitten off part of a man's ear. He was also arrested for burglary on January 14 and February 22.

On February 25 Harold allegedly threatened to slit the throat of another female and burn her house down. The cases are waiting to be heard in court.

An eviction order was served on Mandy Draper (pictured above, centre), 33, of Burnside Avenue, Annitsford, after a member of her family was spotted by police smashing a bike against the pavement and shop shutters in Camperdown.

The bike was then thrown on to the road, nearly causing a collision. Police also arrested him for handling stolen goods and he was spotted punching and kicking a car near his home.

Chris Wray, secretary of the Burradon and Camperdown Forum, said: "This kind of disorder is carried out by a small minority of people but it is affecting many families.

"It's mainly the families of these people who are causing such a disturbance but their parents need to realise it is up to them to control them.

"The community is very pleased the police and council are working so hard to stamp out this kind of anti-social behaviour."

Dawn Emmett, 39, of Garth 24, Killingworth, was served with an eviction notice after son Terrence (pictured above, right), 19, was found to be responsible for scrawling graffiti across Killingworth.

Terrence, who uses the tags `verb' and `server', had even used the walls of their council house to practise writing his names.

Terrence was convicted and fined for possessing cannabis in May 2004 and convicted of dangerous driving on August 2004.

He also faces charges of possession of cannabis following a police raid at the house in January.

L-r: Julie Latimer & Helen Brown

Alan, 47, and Julie Latimer (pictured above, left), 40, face eviction from their home because of the repeated complaints about their son Richard, 18.

Richard is currently awaiting trial at Newcastle Crown court over an alleged assault at Cullercoats Metro Station in August 2004.

Sgt Wade added: "It tends to be the whole family who suffer for the sake of one member. The Latimers are a lovely couple but they are going to be forced to leave their home because of their son Richard's actions." Helen Brown (pictured above, right), 39, of Moor View, Camperdown, was served an eviction notice because of the behaviour of a member of her family.

The family member is currently facing a charge of racially-aggravated assault and is awaiting trial.

Safer Estates manager Colin Boxshall said: "Yesterday's action reinforces our determination to rid estates of those who disrupt the quality of life for others.

"We are making full use of new powers contained within the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 which includes the use of Anti-Social Behaviour Orders and injunctions.

"These orders and agreements are continuing to have the desired effect across North Tyneside and sending out a clear message that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.

"We have seen significant drops in crime and disorder and the feedback from people living on these estates has been excellent.

"People have the right to live in peace and quiet and we will take whatever action is necessary to protect that right."

Three Longbenton tenants also received notification that the council was starting proceedings to recover possession to their homes as a result of them using their properties for drug-related activities.

A further 10 were asked to sign Acceptable Behaviour Agreements.

In the coming weeks, more than 70 people associated with anti-social behaviour have been summoned to ABA final warning surgeries in Battle Hill, Hadrian Park, Howdon, Wallsend, Whitley Bay, Killingworth and North Shields.

First let me say Welcome To Free Republic!  I hope that you will visit frequently and participate as much as you like.  We have MANY British FReepers here and "most" of them seem to put up with us Yanks pretty well, despite our occasional language and culinary differences  :-)

Although I'm delighted that you've found this old thread, I'm saddened because it's apparently because this thug "family" has moved to your area.  May I extend my greatest sympathies to you and I hope that they will cause you no trouble.....Rainhill does indeed sound like a very nice area, and as such it doesn't deserve to be soiled by trash like these people.

Rainhill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

 Rainhill Now

Rainhill is now mainly a commuter town, and is seen a wealthy middle class suburb of Merseyside. Property prices have doubled in recent years making the area even more exclusive. Rainhill enjoys a good community spirit, which adds to the excellent quality of life in the area. It is also home to Rainhill Town AFC.

Rainhill is also the home of popular rugby player Jenny Welsby.

Rainhill Ex-Services Club on Warrington Road was founded in 1946 to provide services to ex-service men and women in the Rainhill area. Nowadays, the Club still offers these services but also opens it's doors to the wider Rainhill and surrounding communities.

Again, welcome to Free Republic and I hope that you will enjoy yourself here   :-)

I think that when I posted this story back in 2005 I had merely been browsing the news and happened upon it by chance.   I try to keep up on current events both here in the USA as well as across the Pond, and this story grabbed my attention not only because of the sinister appearance of the 'family' in the Sun photo but because the story tied in with a lot of others that were in the UK press around that time, where communities were being terrorized by brutal Yob gangs.  Here are some other "Yob Terror" stories from around that time:

Blair Get shot of yobs (PM proposes tough pre-emptive measures for problem youths and parents)

Great Britain Blair war on yob gangs (Sweeping new legislation proposed)

Great Britain Time to make yobs fear the police again, says Howard

Great Britain Yobs' mums face sin-bins (Teachers will be allowed to detain students AND parents)

Great Britain Cam Boot out duff cops (Tory leader promises massive anti-crime effort )

Great Britain Judge says 24-hour drinking will create 'urban savages'

Great Britain Torture girl, 16, led mob (barred from entering town til she is 21)

And yes I know what you mean, although it's been going on so long now and this Bridge 'family' is apparently unchanged or worse, according to your account.  I hope that your community will be able to come to grips with this so that Rainhill's quality of life won't be spoiled.  May God Bless you and give you all strength.  Life is too short to spend it in the state of fear that this 'family' brings to whatever community they move to.

With regard to the Bridges. I live within a (very) short distance of the house they’ve recently been evicted from. They’ve given our neighbourhood 18 months of hell and their parting shot was a brawl in the street where someone was stabbed. I can’t begin to tell you some of the capers we witnessed. The problem is that they have only been moved on (to somewhere else in our area we understand) and so they then become someone else’s issue! I pity those people! The police try their best but they appear to be hamstrung. What was said to Norman Stanley Fletcher - you seem to regard arrest as an occupational hazard - that is how they behave. What really annoys me is that they are all on benefits whilst clearly running a business selling cars from outside the house. I thought we had people checking up on benefit fraud! They have been reported as asking for another chance - they don’t deserve one! All they are interested in is crime! They are not interested in giving anything to the community - all they want to do is take. The bridges are a clear example that the country is going to the dogs - and the liberal/PC/touchy-feely/hug-a-hoody brigade do not realise that they are part of the problem, not the solution.

Welcome to Free Republic, and I hope that you’ll stay :-)

On the one hand I offer congratulations to you for now being free of this trash, but given the current legal conditions it does indeed appear that it will merely be a matter of another neighborhood being subjected to them.

I hope also that another similar family won’t replace them in your own neighborhood.

YES! This family are at it again. And yes they have picked on the wrong family this timeI witnessed as 20 or more youths caused more of a riot than a brawl in the street. This bunch of yobs were brandishing knives and sticks and throwing house brick and paving flags. This was led by the Bridge family. Just three men tried hopelessly to protect their family. One of the Bridge family even tried to run these men over. It was a frightful night which left people injured, one man seriously needing hospital treatment and a family and nieghbourhood full of fear. Hopefully this sick family, that go around terrorising people and communities will realise, THEY HAVE PICKED ON THE WRONG ONES THIS TIME!
