SUBJECT: CHANCELLOR'S EMAIL TO PREVIOUS WRITERS FROM: Office of the Chancellor SENDER: Collect@Colorado.edu DATE: March 24, 2005
Dear Friend:
You were one of many citizens who wrote or called the University of Colorado at Boulder concerning the controversial essay about 9/11 written by Professor Ward Churchill. Because of your interest, I am writing to share with you the outcome of our review of allegations concerning Professor Churchill's conduct and scholarship.
In short, our review team found that Professor Churchill's controversial essay on 9/11 and other public comments are protected by the First Amendment, but that other allegations of plagiarism, misuse of others' work and fabrication may constitute research misconduct.
The report also points to possible research misconduct related to allegations that Churchill misrepresented his ethnicity to gain credibility and attract an audience for his scholarship. Research misconduct, if proven, is subject to university sanctions.
We take these allegations very seriously and will address them through established university procedures that require due process. I have determined that the allegations of research misconduct should be referred to the campus's Standing Committee on Research Misconduct for thorough investigation. Appropriate action will be taken upon completion of the committee's work.
More information and a copy of the full report are available on the campus web site at www.colorado.edu/news.
Thank you for your continuing interest in the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Sincerely,
Chancellor Phil DiStefano
Sorry, Chancellor, not good enough.
This is a dup. I was too slow.
This is a stall. The technique works all too well. Drag out the investigation until people's attention and zeal fade away and then just close the record quietly. Similar technique is happening with the challenge to the Governor's race in Washington state. Regardless of the merits, the process will simply drag out until the result is meaningless.
DBL Speak Deluxe!!! In short he will not be fired. Knowing CU he will probably get a big fat raise. Pity, used to be such a proud school.
My exact thoughts this morning when I read an article on the subject. Time for the CO State Legislature to step in and appoint an independent investigation of not only Ward but the entire Colorado University system. That ought to pucker a few starfish in the Ivory Towers.
Is Governor Owens still sleeping ? Best not wake him up.
One of my boys went to the CU campus on a prospective college visit with my wife. Beautiful place, nice people. Most were embarrassed by the Churchill foolishness. But he decided to go to U Wisconsin at Madison. Worse weather, but better school. And, they didn't give Churchill tenure, either.
there were two previous threads on this.
nothing surprising here.
they will not fire him for what he says or publishes. that's academic freedom.
however, lying about his ethnicity or military record to gain employment is another matter.
and plagiarism is a very serious offense. if found guilty in 7+ months, he could be fired.
If the gov and the legislature are smart they'll let CU screw this up like a soup sandwich before they step in. Makes them look better.
The report also points to possible research misconduct related to allegations that Churchill misrepresented his ethnicity to gain credibility and attract an audience for his scholarship. Research misconduct, if proven, is subject to university sanctions.
IMHO, these charges are much more actionable and could lead more easily to his dismissal, as opposed to going after him over what he said, which would garner Leftist-ACLU help.
Lying on your resume (Ethnicity) is almost always a firing offence. Likewise as an academician, lying in your research (Plagarism, Fabrication) is almost always a career-terminating offence.
Ward Churchill? He's had WAY too many "15 minutes" of fame. Wish they'd take him off the news. He's a creep unworthy of attention.
You may be on to something.
There you have it, The same thing would have worked for Dan Rather if not for the bloggers.
Hope you've sniffed this out correctly.
I hope so too.
Going the route of examining his statements only brings in the ACLU and Academic Freedom crowd. I believe this is why they changed the inquiry a few weeks back and instead are examining the charges illustrated in the present article.
The change of emphasis towards Lying and Plagerism, while NOT the original reason this got this started were nonetheless brought forward by this clown being brought under a closer microscope. In addition, the current charges are more easily prosecutable and less messy because they don't bring in the ACLU. JMHO.
This clown needs to be removed and as Ward Churchill himself said, quoting Malcolm X, "By any means necesary".
see post 2. I realized it too late. I posted as soon as I received the e-mail and was still too late!
