I've been searching for the right word to describe what is happening to Terri Schiavo, a word that has some real blood to it.
It's important to find the right word now, because, by the time you read this, the severely brain-damaged woman might be dead.
Perhaps you've noticed other bloodless words being flipped at her, words like "viability" and phrases like "pull the plug."
These words were once the issue of bloodless people, of clerks and sophists who can prove almost anything with their fine arguments. The rest of us have fed on them until they shape how we think, shaping our options, shaping our future.
If you love someone who is severely disabled, you've thought about this, about their lives years from now, and you wonder about those folks who talk abstractly, using the phrase "quality of life" and you can hear the threat in what they say.
And if you don't think what's happening has anything to do with your own future, you're wrong. Our collective attitude toward her death will likely shape the legislation of tomorrow, when the Pepsi Generation is forced to realize that immortality isn't an option.
What's happening to Schiavo suggests that Americans have finally been taught to think like bureaucrats. Bureaucrats cover their flanks with e-mail and send copies to others to establish positions. They almost say what a thing is, but not outright, not exactly. The bureaucrat embraces the neutral and avoids conflict.
And we've allowed this. We've embraced the values of the bureaucrat, of the manager, and replaced those older, iconic Western values of self-reliance, accepting responsibility and meeting things head on. One of these values--albeit ignored through countless wars and cruelties--is that human life is sacred. But now we are about process. Now we are about avoiding consequence.

Texas,
Don't worry. 'Trash' is very angry at her inner beauty. You can see that in his words.
Innocence hurts the eyes and souls of the damned.
There comes a point where they have to flee before it.
Come what may, her soul has been refined over time to where all the dross is out and we see only the beauty of what God see's within the Lovely Lady.
'Trash -
Thank you, sir.
At first I didn't know who you were speaking of because there are no current pictures of the lovely Terri out for the world to see.
Then I realized who you were speaking of and my mind when searching through it's many little 'rooms' until it found what it was searching for.
I saw the wedding picture of a woman who was giving herself to someone she loved. In God's eye, she took her place before the man who would kill her. How God looks at Michael is not for me to see, for God's anger is Just and not to be glanced at just for curiosity.
The next picture my mind cast itself upon was the one where she's in a tank top. What a breathtaking beautiful young woman! Many a head must have turned, and many a man must have wondered how a man could have got so lucky.
There's one where she's in a wheel chair. Relying on others for her care. What a smile she had. I wondered the first time I saw it, "who made her laugh where her eyes shone so bright?" One day, I'll know.
There's one where she's looking up at her mother. How many times, I wondered, has her mother remembered holding Terri to her body to ease pain as a baby, a child, young girl and teenager? As she both desparately tries to save her daughter's life and yet prepare herself to face the sanctioned murder of her little girl, I wonder does she feel those memories, as a mother is drawn to do? To gather her daughter up and hold her one more time, just one more time. I see that very struggle each time in my mind's eye.
And then...then there's the last one taken for the world to see. It may very well be the picture you so jealously hate. When all the false pride of a young beautiful girl/bride has been gleaned away. When the look is one of just wanting to be held, to be loved, and safe - clean and fed.
I don't doubt you laugh.
Oh, how I want to thank you, 'Trash!
For though I'll see those pictures again and again in the way the world wants them to be looked at, I'll see them again, and again through the eyes of the Lord.
And you know something, 'trash...?
Without your hate, I would have missed seeing the love of, and for this beautiful girl, called Terri.
In the journalism or writing business, their articles are distinctively rambling, overly long and pointless -- because they get paid by the word rather than saying the most with the least. That would be very incorrect. Formerly that's all one saw -- until the advent of THE BLOG, that pesky, uncontrollable communications of the Undead.
Why, weren't the cows euphoric?
Well, that's what I'm afraid might be next. They've already turned food and water into "extraordinary measures" and "life support." And, just thinking back on some people I've known, and on some horror stories I have heard from talkshow callers the past few days, I'm beginning to wonder how pervasive something like this is. Terri would have been gone long ago if her parents had gone along with her husband. As much as I am praying for this situation to turn out for the good, I'm beginning to wonder if Terri Schiavo isn't just the tip of the iceberg.
Oh, it's not bizarre.
TheDon, if you read the reports back and for within the Nazi communications you'll see the same thing.
Where they even had a word for a person: A unit.
So many units were delivered here or to be transported there of disposed of.
And they counted all the 'assets' of the units, breaking them down to the last golden tooth.
It's not bizarre: It's repetition.
What a beautiful response to such ugly words!
I agree. I guess I'm just having a hard time accepting such thinking the Red Staters among us. From the FR poll, roughly 15 to 20% of our members are pro-abortion.
zzen01,
I keep pondering on the book of Esther.
There's a part where the king, convinced by his advisors to allow the Jews to be killed, all of them starting at a certain date.
Esther goes to the King and reveals her bloodline and asks for the chance for her people to defend themselves.
The king finds out about the treachery of Haman, his advisor. Haman gets hanged, and the Jews have a chance to prepare for their survival.
They do survive.
Though, I don't know what God's Plan is, and my heart is wont to know the future, I know there's always a reason for something in God's Plan.
Michael may believe he's got the upper hand.
And indeed, it may look like the evil plans paid off for those in the circles close to him.
But no one beats God.
The underlying premise of liberalism is that nobody should improve or be allowed to improve themselves -- thus providing competition to the hegemony of the status quo, of which the liberals are now The Establishment. That was the worst nightmare possible. Waking up is the simple solution. Shortly they will pass laws disallowing anybody to wake up.
See post 61.. pinging you to a beautiful post.
Thank you, freecopper01.
In this fallen world the thorns cause us to determine how bad we value the Rose.
And those 15 -20%... They were never really us.
I don't necessarily agree with that. Michael is just lucky to have big money behind him who want to establish a precedent in America of legally murdering certain American citizens.
If our Judiciary weren't a bunch of criminals themselves, it would be Michael, the abuser, who would be in jail right now. He is just the new "Jane Roe" for the Culture of Death crowd, who have taken over the Judiciary, thanks to the Democrat voters over the years.
Shorten your name to the third syllable to better reflect who you are.
bttt
God's love, through Christ.
Without it, all is lost.
If, after this is over, Michael should be caught in some other death attempt, what would his supporters say? He's admitted withdrawing feeding tubes from both his parents. If somehow he gets a thrill out of having the power of life and death and tries it again, or should be caught doing something violent, perhaps to his current common law wife, something he does in a more obvious or direct way -- then those now supporting him would have to rethink their support of him and perhaps they would then begin to see the horror of the position they have taken. And maybe then there would be such a reaction that things would turn back the other way.
A lot of Kervorkian supporters had to sputter, backtrack and wonder after it became clear he was getting his jollies by throwing around his power. The same could happen here.
I'm just saying that if Michael is the sociopathic killer some people have implied he is, he will not stop here.
Dr Laura is letting everybody have it right now. The whole damned country.
Good. Somebody needs to.
Schiavo's brother is another lying sack of fecal matter.
Proof? Well, now he issaying that that all of a sudden HE also remembers hear Terri say that if she were ever incapacitated, she wanted to be starved to death.
