The University of Colorado should make sure candidates for the school's presidency place an emphasis on attracting and retaining minorities, one official told the Board of Regents on Wednesday.
Assuring that the search committee "makes diversity part of the discussion would not only be important, but it hasn't happened sometimes in the past when it should," said Carmen Williams, assistant vice president for diversity at CU.
The regents are expected today to select a search committee to replace President Elizabeth Hoffman, who announced her resignation March 7.
After hearing a report that minority enrollment is stagnant students of color make up 14 percent of the undergraduate student body on the Boulder campus regents asked Williams what they can do to improve diversity and the general racial climate.
Black students on the Boulder campus have experienced a string of racially motivated incidents since last month. Officials have reported 58 "bias-motivated incidents" this school year in CU dormitories.
"Things are pretty bad," said student Tri-executive Joseph Neguse.
Like Williams, Neguse said CU's recruitment and retention programs for students of color are successful but need more money and staffing to grow.
"I can name five programs off the bat, but they're coming under the arm of budget cuts," Neguse said. "We need to be placing more money into them."
"attracting and retaining minorities"
You mean like Republicans?
meaning: "whites, conservatives, Republicans or people with Christian beliefs need not apply."
Instead of "diversity" why don't they try competence and integrity for a change?
place an emphasis on attracting and retaining minorities,
How about a goal of academic excellence instead???
Why don't they save them some ink and simply say racism is a prerequisite?
I think the problem at CU is that there is too many chiefs and not enough Indians :-)
Peter Principle award..........they are waaaaaaaay past their level of competence!!!!!!
They need me for school Prez. Lotsa diversity rolled into one loveable pissant. See, I like every food from Mexican to Thai to Soul food. I have a fondness for chicks of all races. And I live in the Seattle area so I'm used to dealing with communists and poofers.
The perfect candidate.
The diversity police are more insidious racists than the KKK.
I know the perfect minority for the job, Ward Churchill.
You got that right!! In the name of diversity, it's now OK to discriminate against specified groups of citizens.
So they are looking for "diversity." Looks to me like its a done deal @ CU. Just more of the same. What a crock. Apparently talent & ability takes a back seat to skin color.
If that's not overtly racist, then there is no such thing as racism.
So your president needs to be diverse? They should be white and black and asian and hispanic and native american and protestant and catholic and jewish and agnostic and muslim and rich and poor and male and female and straight and gay and bisexual and transgendered?
You better hope Michael Jackson gets acquitted.
According to the 2000 census data, "white persons" made up about 83% of Colorado's population, "blacks" were at about 4%, "Asians" at about 2%, Indians at 1%, "other" at 7%, and "two or more races" at 3%.
I'm not sure what "persons of color" means to the race-counters at CU, but a figure of about 14%, even if "stagnant", seems to be pretty much in line with the population of Colorado. So, diversity has been achieved at C.U.! Declare victory and go away, and maybe they can hire people who will focus on teaching and research.
Diversity is the scam of the new millennium designed to promote and foster the new racism. As long as racism is sanctioned by an institution of higher learning it is not racism at all, but diversity. Incidentally, diversity only applies to skin color and not to opinion. Here at the University of Missouri, we have a black culture center but no center for Asians, Europeans, Indians, or whatever. This is enlightened thinking according to the KKK of higher learning. We have set-aside scholarships based on race; hard-working, high achievers need not apply. Academic scholarships are available for all races, it is just that money once reserved for these students has now been siphoned off for those that may under-perform, but that is ok if they meet appropriate race genetics. Higher education is the new champion of racismget used to it, we know best.
The holy grail of diversity is bound to perpetuate fraudulent faculty, phony scholarship, and incompetent graduates.
What a bunch of baloney. I'll bet not one of these incidents was an actual case of bias or racism. These things are virtually always hoaxes.
Ping.
Not to mention her job security concerns.
