Should N.C. homeschoolers report to public school authorities? They will soon, under a plan announced today to a joint appropriations committee – if the committee approves.
Secretary of Administration Gwynn Swinson today presented Governor Easley's latest budget proposal, which would move the Division of Non-Public Education (DNPE) under the authority of the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), ending twenty-five years of independence for non-public education in North Carolina.
Secretary Swinson explained this as a cost saving benefit and a way to "deal with the proliferation of homeschoolers" in the state. Some committee members expressed interest in increasing oversight of homeschoolers.

When every Florida public school child out-performs my "parent-educated" children, I'll consider doing something else.

Mike Easly (D) was just reelected governor. He can't run again, so he is lame duck.
He ran on a platform of being in favor of homeschooling, he has family homeschooling, yada yada yada...

The ratings of the Guilford County Public Access Television will zoom with the showings of the School Board/Homeschoolers public meetings. Talk about fireworks and police presence!

This is totally nuts. If I lived in NC I would be outraged and I am not a homeschooler.
Don't get me wrong - I am outraged about this, but I don't think my opinion would hold much sway with NC officials.
Oh yeah, not to mention the voting potential that a Homeschool block would create. Guilford has 2000+ kids in home school. Counting parents and grandparents that probably translates into 5000+ voters who had no dog in the public school board elections before but they will now. Might actually cause the board to be as minimally intrusive as possible.
