Report: Accused School Shooter Was On Prozac

WEB EXTRA: Red Lake Coverage.

Mar 24, 2005 6:47 am US/Central Red Lake, Minn. (AP) The teenager accused of killing nine people and then himself on the Red Lake Indian Reservation was apparently struggling with depression.

A cultural coordinator at Red Lake Middle School told the Washington Post that Jeffrey Weise was taking the anti-depressant Prozac and was hospitalized for suicidal tendencies at least once.

A bus driver for a local health center told the paper he once drove Weise 60 miles to a psychiatric ward in Thief River Falls. The boy's grandmother also said he suffered from depression.

Students described Weise as a loner. He apparently posted messages on a neo-Nazi Web site, and a computer animation attributed to him shows a person shooting four people, blowing up a police car and committing suicide.

The SSRI (prozac zoloft, paxil, etc) remove inhibitions.

Hmmm....maybe that explains the subject of this thread:

I wouldn't mind that. The Breaking News is filled with other trash DAYS old. I think one of the mods does not like the prozac issue for some reason and is using their power to delete it.

If it is the policy of Jim Robinson I am all for it. It is his website. If it is an individual well I want to know

For all who profess to know both the reasons for prescribing and the effects post prescription of antidepressants, I would hope you have first hand experience with mental illness, the difficult methods of treating chemical imbalances, and actual side effects of certain drugs before you come to a particular conclusion as to whether this young man needed the drug to begin with, or if it contributed to his mental instability in this tragedy.

I have several family members that have committed suicide, AFTER STOPPING taking the very medication that helped them for so many years. Including Prozac.

Heck, I don't watch the MSM. I hear updates on the radio, but 99% of my news comes from FR.

You've got 10 million+ Americans on Prozac. One goes on a shooting rampage = obviously the Prozac?

Maybe it was because the sun rose that morning.

The question is which came first the chicken or the egg or in other words, was the kid on prosac because he is crazy or was the kid crazy because he was on prosac.

You frame the question very well. From what the media reports, this young man had severe problems befor prozac and the medication clearly did not help him. However, the lack of any positive benefit does not necessarily indicate any negative influence. In the words of the Indian Chief in the movie "Little Big Man", "Sometimes the Magic works, sometimes it doesn't."

I hate to say it. But I have to agree. Giving SSRIs to children present a dagner which cannot be understated.

If we continue to do so, we WILL see more kids on these drugs go balistic the same way this kid did and kil a bunch of people.

These drugs are like a "bull in a china shop" in your brain.. they may help ease some depression, but they can make a person behavious dangerous and unpredicatable. I know first hand, trust me.

Bones

IMO, these mass murders aren't caused by either one. If they were, they'd be happening just as often everywhere else kids gather.

There has to be a reason they only occur in a public school, never a private school. Only in public school, never a movie theatre. Only in a public school, never an arcade. Only in a public school, never a concert. Only in a public school, never a park. Only in a public school... Hmmm, seems to be a pattern here.

Yes, that is acctually to be expected. Any time you take a drug that replaces or enhances a natural brain chemical, your brain learns that it needs to produce less.

When you stop the medication, you are, at least temporarily, much worse off than before. All kinds of medications produce withdrawal symptoms.

Good grief, many of people take Prozac and don't harm themselves or anyone else. This kid had issues. Enough said.

Clinical depression is intractable and often leads to suicidal or murderous thoughts even without treatment.

There are really no answers to these cases unless we want to allow involuntary commitment to mental institutions.

Doing nothing is certainly not better than trying everything.

If he was crazy he should have been on many other meds besides Prozac. But always remember the Liberals invented "mainstreaming".

Being depressed and being a mass murderer are not the same.

The prosac concern is not just that these kids kill themselves, but that they also take others with them. Playing with brain chemistry should be a last resort -- not the first and easiest step.

The question is which came first the chicken or the egg or in other words, was the kid on prosac because he is crazy or was the kid crazy because he was on prosac.

And there's no guarantee that the "suspect" was even taking the medicine, especially if he was resistant to the idea that he needed help.

And the usual problem with these drugs is the cecession of use without counsel and without tapering off. Very likely this kid was on Prozak and quite on his own, (because he could not live with being mentally ill) and triggered the episode. We probably will not know because he killed the links to his pre-rampage behavior. but this would be my guess.
