Neurologists see little sign of activity in Schiavo's brain

BY BOB LAMENDOLA

South Florida Sun-Sentinel

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - (KRT) - Scans of Terri Schiavo's brain show that the great majority of her gray matter where thinking and feeling occur has died off and been replaced by watery fluid, with no chance of growing back, neurologists said.

About 70 to 90 percent of Schiavo's upper brain is gone, and there's also damage to her lower brain that controls instinctive functions like breathing and swallowing, said three Florida neurologists who viewed 12 of her CT "computed tomography" X-ray scans Tuesday and Wednesday.

"This is as severe brain damage as I've ever seen," said Dr. Leon Prockop, a professor and former chairman of neurology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, upon viewing the scans.

So why are you so seemingly eager to see the death of an innocent person based on questionable testimony? Why, for this patient, do you not insist on seeing at least written authorization attesting to the patient's wishes, which in a matter of life and death would certainly be reasonable? Hearsay evidence is not normally considered acceptable in cases involving the life or death of another individual. Where there is reasonable doubt there is a good reason to err on the side of caution, on the side of life.

Like I said before, if you or anyone else can show me an irrefutable document, signed by Terri Schiavo in the presence of witnesses, just like any other important legal document would be, attesting to her wishes to be killed by starvation, I will let it go. If you insist on basing life and death decisions on the basis of hearsay evidence from conflicted witnesses, then I will question it.

Some doctors are right about this, and some are wrong.

The question is which set of doctors is right.

We need more testing to know for sure.

But they want to kill her before we can do that.

She did have a CAT scan which showed that the part of her brain that is what we would call conscious is gone. Its liquified.

A lie, she still has cortex and the DCF Neurologist who examined her says she may be in a lower conscious state rather than PVS. His name is Dr WIlliam Cheshire and he doesn't ave any moral objection to removing feeding tubes from patients with confirmed PVS. SO can we stop the liquified crap now?

"I believe the courts have decided that was Terri's wish."

The courts decided . . .based on the testimony of three 'witnesses'; all Shiavo's; less than devoted, husband. . .and two of his family members.

OTOH. . .Terri's family and friends testify and her Catholic religion supports their position that Terri did NOT want this; that she was offended/upset when Karen Ann Quinlan's life support was withdrawn.

The truth is o f course, WE cannot know Terri's wishes. . .nor can we imagine her life experience for these past years. She lives in the present; we are imposing our 'time frame' and values of a life, lived in that frame; over what Terri is experiencing.

The outrage expressed here by those who support Terri; is not just for the sole purpose of pro-longing her life. . .or her suffering; whatever the case; but to just insure; that a mistake is not being made here; because without the benefit of new scans. . .a fresh if only final, look at Terri; then these life/death judgments can only be seen as manipulative calculations that serve some other purpose - some other agenda.

That could be the swallow test they won't let her have

According to the Guardian Ad litems report to Jeb Bush she has had multiple swallow tests and attempts at theraphy. So is he another liar as well.

Oh ok if it isn't an attack than sorry for my rude postings, I just saw this. I didn't see him because the last time I saw him was in the summer. I was in schol and I wanted to say goodbye to him when they made the decision and I din't want to go through the pain of doing so again. It was of course difficult for me. My sister was too young to really understand and has only one memory of my dad not being in the hospital. I was nearly suicidal, and if I didn't see him while he was dying it helped me save a bit of my sanity. In short I didn't want to. My dad was a selfless man who was very close to me, and I don't think he would have wanted me to either, he would have wanted me to remember him hiking with me and playing baseball and bedtime stories, not him sick and dying, and motionless in that bed.

This doctor must re-learn what in fact a PET scan does. First of all a PET uses tagged glucose to measure uptake in the brain. A MRI evaluates structures in the brain....all of which can remain normal in a person post hypoxic encephalopathy....and mean absolutely nothing.

I wonder how much of a brain Ted Kennedy has left after being soaked wih alcohol.

Experts find that 70% to 90% of Ted Kennedy's brain is 80 Proof!

It's been said here before, but a conventional brain MRI is not definitive at all and would add little to the argument one way or another. A PVS diagnosis is based primarily upon serial exams over time and is supplemented by functional studies - EEG, PET, and functional MRI. Any functional test, however, is going to be secondary to the results of the examinations.

Because sadly a document dosen't exist and her husbands conversations with his wife is what we have to go with. Did the parents ever say that they had a conversation with her to the contrary?

I mean that your own decision of if you want to be allowed to die under those circumstances is personal to you sorry I didn't clarfy

And this is what I am trying to clarify for you:

Under WHAT circumstances? The answer is circumstances defined by the government to determine when it is prosecutable murder or suicide and when it is not.

I only get upset at people that like watching other people suffer - which you seem to have no problem wit

Well actually all the experts that the unbaised media trot out insists that she feels no pain, and that the starvation and lack of water are painless. Many of your friends here say Terri Shcindler does not have enough brain function to know suffering. But please get yourself some water, a judge hasn't decided you can't.

Oh, and I guess her parents enjoy seeing her suffering.

It has escaped too many that Terri was recovering, albeit very slowly, prior to the court monetary awards. Then her then husband commanded that the therapy stop and no therapy be given. He has enforced that neglect for more than a decade. It is possible that she might not recover from her current decline, now that Michael has worked his magic of abuse on her. But the forced neglect ought to be a strong indicator that he is not a suitable guardian for her, and that the diagnosis of Greer's chia pet examiners should be disregarded in light of their choice to ignore her earlier progress!

You mean all the money St. Michael got for her care isn't going to her care.

According to the indepent trust that manages the money she won (750,000), she only has about $40,000 left. Michael got $300,000 separately and he spent that years ago on nursing school education, etc. Terri is on Medicaid although the Hospice has been providing pretty much free care during the past year.

Actually Wolfson recommended more swallowing tests that were never performed.

Tonight one of her nurses reiterated her sworn testimony that she fed Terri jello.

No - she's being taken care of by medicaid.

Why isn't all the award money that St. Michael got paying for her care? He SAID that's why he needed all that money. You mean he misrepresented the truth? NO!

Well, you see, I have a little problem with her "legal" guardian. I think there might be a tiny bit of conflict there what with the adulterious relationship he's been in for the past 7 years and the two illigitimate kids he's sired on her. Might also have a little to do with him dumping her in a hospice right after he got the malpractice settlement too.

Next thing you know they will be shuttling all kinds of people off to the hospice. AIDS patients will be diagnosed....poof....off to the hospice to be starved to death. A little senile? BAM, hospice and food withheld. Anyone who could be considered a burden can just be disposed of. All they have to do is have someone say "yeah, I heard him/her say once in a conversation that they wouldn't want to live like that" and all legal requirements will have been met. Good way to get rid of an unwanted partner, huh? Don't even have to worry about all that community property and stuff.
