Neurologists see little sign of activity in Schiavo's brain
BY BOB LAMENDOLA
South Florida Sun-Sentinel
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - (KRT) - Scans of Terri Schiavo's brain show that the great majority of her gray matter where thinking and feeling occur has died off and been replaced by watery fluid, with no chance of growing back, neurologists said.
About 70 to 90 percent of Schiavo's upper brain is gone, and there's also damage to her lower brain that controls instinctive functions like breathing and swallowing, said three Florida neurologists who viewed 12 of her CT "computed tomography" X-ray scans Tuesday and Wednesday.
"This is as severe brain damage as I've ever seen," said Dr. Leon Prockop, a professor and former chairman of neurology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, upon viewing the scans.

I'm sorry folks, the poor woman died 15 years ago and we are just fighting about how long to keep her corpse warm. After 15 years she isn't about to recover.
Actually I wouldn't stop. I uphold my patients rights at all costs.
Because she would have to have brain surgery to remove implants that were put in years ago when they did try to regenerate her brain. Do an MRI with the implants in and you wouldnt have to worry about interpreting the results because what was left of her brain would explode.
She did have a CAT scan which showed that the part of her brain that is what we would call conscious is gone. Its liquified. She could have a PET scan. Im not sure why she didnt. Probably a disagreement in advance over what would occur based on what was found. Schindlers wouldnt agree to terminate nutrition so why do it?
The story continues "Although the scans are 9 years old, the doctors said there's little chance Schiavo's brain improved since then".
Have heard the lawyers say NO Chance. . .but the opposition-medical folks are a tad more careful. . .language more safely couched in descriptions that include. . .'almost . . .most likely. . .unlikely. . .'take a miracle'. . .
Of course, who would know if one is not happening if they have not taken a scan for nine years.
How is it; these medical people are content to diagnose and prognosticate from nine-year old records as they are called on to make a life or death judgment call. . . Why are they not at the least; professionally curious as to some possibility scenarios for Terri?
And HOW, do these Doctors. . .or the Courts; know, that these scans are in fact, of Terri's brain; and not someone elses.
Can those here; who go to Doctors of course. . .imagine seeing a new Doctor for a physical and carrying or faxing their almost ten year-old x-rays, for that Doctor to make a diagnosis; while insisting that updated views are not necessary. . .because you know. . .nothing has changed. . .most likely. . .
I lost a kidney from heart complications as shown via a CT, two day's later an MRI showed this not to be true and it was right.
Roe V Wade 1973
Is she still your wife????
What will a MRI show that a 10 year old CT scan wouldn't, hum?
I am sure of 2 things...Life is short enough...death may last a while
How true.
My hunch from everything I've read is there may be some corruption going on here in the Florida legal and medical system. There is a very complicated web of events that has happened here and it's tough to be informed about all of it. All I can say is that it's morally wrong to kill someone in her condition, especially when her family is perfectly willing to take care of her at their expense. That is the most shocking aspect of this case--her "husband" refuses to turn her over to her own parents and siblings and prefers to kill her instead. And then a state judge goes along with that idea! This is turning into a national disgrace.
I'll say this about the Shiavo case. Based on the opinions of MD's on this forum, the term "medical ethics" is below "legal ethics," in my book.
Hey! That could be the swallow test they won't let her have. Thanks
Wow. I'm impressed. You've got quite a few notches on your belt, then. Just go to a crooked judge, solicit hearsay testimony from witnesses with an obvious conflict of interest, and you'll off the victim on that basis alone. Nothing like medics ushering in the culture of death for a brave new world.
What does the "msu" stand for, Mengele State University? Who are we talking to here? I didn't think Jack Kevorkian was allowed access to a computer from his jail cell...
I find this power of Michael to be incredible; that he can just say 'no' to a medical community who must make an appropriate diagnosis.
Do not get it. . .nor do I get that they let him get away with this. . .Liberals all no doubt. Hand-in-hand. . .
The judge is only listening to what MS wants.
And all the other judges are just backing up their good ole buddy, Judge Greer, to spite President Bush and Congress.
She cant have an MRI. She has implants in her brain from years ago when they were trying to rehabilitate her.
