Neurologists see little sign of activity in Schiavo's brain

BY BOB LAMENDOLA

South Florida Sun-Sentinel

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - (KRT) - Scans of Terri Schiavo's brain show that the great majority of her gray matter where thinking and feeling occur has died off and been replaced by watery fluid, with no chance of growing back, neurologists said.

About 70 to 90 percent of Schiavo's upper brain is gone, and there's also damage to her lower brain that controls instinctive functions like breathing and swallowing, said three Florida neurologists who viewed 12 of her CT "computed tomography" X-ray scans Tuesday and Wednesday.

"This is as severe brain damage as I've ever seen," said Dr. Leon Prockop, a professor and former chairman of neurology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, upon viewing the scans.

Where did you get your medical degree from? What's your speciality?

What makes you think I have a medical degree? And why does it matter?

I know from catching your posts from time to time that you're one of the smartest folks in here. Been enjoying your commentary for years now. IMHO, this incident marks a sad chapter in the history of FR, when otherwise logical good-thinking folks let emotions blind them to some pretty important truths. Must say I'm a bit ashamed. Good on ya for staying true in the face of such chaos and noise.

1973 or 1974 with the Roe vs Wade decision to kill unborn babies.

That I don't know, but the Noble-prize nominated neurologist did.

Today, an affidavit from neurologist Dr. Cheshire who recently spent several hours with her, I believe, and concluded that more likely than not, she is not in a PVS.

Doctors can disagree. A life is in the balance.

I've read that certain tests availale now can show dispotiviely if she is in a PVS. Why not run them?

Sure, we noticed that last time you were here. How you made a lot of typos.

"...The scans were taken in 1996, five years after her heart stopped due to a chemical imbalance..."

Seems to me we should AT LEAST get an updated set of pictures using updated technology. Why hasn't this been done? Scared of what it might show?

Maybe some people actually believe those of us without medical degrees can't read or think for ourselves.

Does this mean because he doesn't have a brain they will remove Michael Moore's feeding hose (tube is too small)?

"Because courts, my friend, aren't perfect. Need I remind you of these goofs by the Supreme Court (that all knowing body that never makes a mistake): Scott v. Sanford, Plessy v. Ferguson, Roe v. Wade, Lawrence v. Texas. With a track record like that, who wouldn't support the all- knowing courts?/sarcasm"

Well, if you don't believe in the rule of law what can I say. I agree that a number of pretty poor decisions have come out of our courts but unfortunately, that's what our constitution calls for. I believe in the constitution.

I pity all people in that situation, but I don't see what keeping her alive by mechanical means is going to do.

What "mechanical means"? You mean, feeding her?

I don't really see what keeping you alive by feeding you is "going to do", either. But I don't go around arguing that you can and should be killed on that basis.

An MRI is the definitive diagnosis for Persistent Vegetative State, which Felos and Michael claim Terri has; but, how did they come up with that diagnoses with an MRI?

If killing someone were always a personal decision then anyone could kill you right now.

Keeley claims to be the daughter of Hugh Finn. If true, this means her mother killed her father in the exact same manner that Terri is being killed.

Also, at least one Noble-prize nominated neurologist who spent 10 hours with her says that she is not in a PVS.

And he's been discredited here with facts about his credentials rather thoroughly. I'm quite in favor of more tests in Terri's case. I think hucksters on either side hurt more than help in reaching a determination that we all can live with.

Great... who heard her make her decision? ??? Is it in writing? When was her decision made known? ...did I hear it was "remembered" 7 years later?

Your statement makes about as much sense as Dan Rather reporting John Kerry is a war hero.

It's amazing how certain people on FR are so positively dedicated to ensuring that Terri is killed ASAP, isn't it?

Well, and rather disgusting as well, no?
