DCF Considers Removing Schiavo from Hospice by Force
Palm Beach Post ^ | 3.23.05 | Dara Kam

State officials say they are considering removing Terri Schiavo from hospice, by force if necessary, despite numerous court orders upholding the removal of the artificial nutrition tube that has kept her alive for 15 years.

Lucy Hadl, secretary of the Department of Children and Families, said Wednesday morning that her staff is relying on a state law that gives the department the authority to intervene on behalf of a vulnerable adult who is 'suffering from abuse or neglect that presents a risk of death or serious physical injury.'

Hadl said that the DCF would have to file a petition in order to remove Schiavo, but that 'it doesn't mean we'd have to have judicial approval in advance of taking the action if we believed it met the threshold for doing it.'

Hadl said that seven years of court rulings backing Schiavo's husband Michael, in his contention that Terri Schiavo did not wish to be kept alive artificially would not stop the DCF from taking action.

'We're not compelled to look at prior judicial proceedings,' Hadl said.

What we are compelled to look at is the presenting circumstances and any allegiations of abuse and neglect that we have recieved. So we have to deal with those and fufill out statutory responsibility.'

I am sure the freepers will be quite helpful to Jeb if he needs them

I doubt it. News coverage from the Hospice building today didn't show more than 100 protesters. There's a lot of bold talk on this site, but very few people are actually showing up to do something.

That's probably why Bush is relaxing in Crawford at the moment rather than taking concrete action.

Hey man, Sarah Scantlin was in a vegetative state until she came out 2/11/2005. After that, it was stated she was mis-diagnosed, that she was really in a coma. You would just bury her alive and say oh well sorry 'bout that.

Terri's brain has turned into a liquid state. There is no reversing that. As much as you want to believe that she will, she will NEVER come out of it.

For every Sarah Scantlin, I can show you 100 cases where patients reminded in a PVS.

"her wish (as decided by numerous courts) that she not live like this."

hmmmm, so it is HER wish as DECIDED by the courts . . .

substituted judgment is a very powerful tool to invoke, is it not, along with "the right to die".

Well, a lot of us are justifiably wary about substituted judgment giving us a "right to die" without our consent and against our true wishes.

But don't worry about that. Just calm down and get a glass of water.

"She is a vegetable, her brain does not function and has turned in a liquid state."

No, she is not. Prominent physicians have said as much.

How about this: I guarantee that she never said she would want to be starved to death if she were physically impaired.

Physically impaired? Please.

She is permanently and severally brain damaged.

having one's brain turn into liquid is not a physical impairment.

Stop using words to describe Terri's state that do not apply to Terri's state.

"Terri's brain has turned into a liquid state."

What in the world are you talking about? If that were the case, her heart would stop beating and she would stop breathing. Most certainly she would not laugh and attempt to verbalize, as she does.

You've sucked in some seriously bogus information somewhere.

You're the one doing that. Brains don't "turn into liquid" until after you die.

From the link...

Terri Schiavo fell into a coma in 1990, and has been in a vegetative state ever since. Neurological tests and brain scans indicate that her cerebral cortex is now principally liquid.

There is no such entity as the Florida State Police; never has been and never will be. Florida has only the Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement that's without power in this case, county sheriff departments and local police. The governor has no, repeat no control over any uniformed police agency except the Highway Patrol, and they have no enforcement power unless an event is connected to traffic. All this talk about a show of police force is nonsense. And, oh yes, don't even suggest the national guard, that would outrageous even to the governor.

So is that the reason for the cremation? Get rid of the evidence "just incase she actually did have a brain"?

I know that if I could afford to take off and fly to Tampa-St Pete, I would be there. Most definitely.

However, the problem is many of us can't make it there and taking about it on-line is our recourse.
