X wing was a 4 blade helicopter that would stop the blades with two forward and two backward.

the forward swept wing was an X (experimental) plane built by Grumman, using an F-5 forward fuselage.

The Luftwaffe developed a foward swept wing aircraft back in 1945, 18 degrees forward sweep, as I remember. Nothing new under the sun.

The X-31 had paddles to deflect the exhaust. Gave great maneuverability, but we aren't fighting with guns anymore. A highly maneuverable missile with a lethal warhead only has to get close. You don't have to intercept and track, you just have to point.

Some network centered warfare aspects are also making life more complex for fighters.
