THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Republicans ignored polls showing public disapproval of congressional involvement in the Terri Schiavo case and instead acted on behalf of their party's pro-life base. "It is political, but everything in Washington is political to some degree," Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said of the successful move by congressional Republicans, with President Bush's support, to let federal courts review the case. Pro-life groups have rallied around the case of Mrs. Schiavo, the brain-damaged Florida woman whose husband and parents have clashed over whether she should continue to be sustained through a feeding tube.

Sounds like someone is desperate to live and die by the polls again. I strongly suggest that conservatives continue to ignore the polls.
This issue is, for practical purposes, over already. Nobody will get any points from this, nor lose points over this - it will be forgotten soon.
I would like to believe that what motivated the Republican Senators and Representatives was principle, not politics. But, who knows? I feel certain that President Bush signed the bill based upon his pro-life principles.
"This issue ... will be forgotten soon."
I hope not.
I disagree. If the death lobby liberals win this one it will be trumpeted as their return to power.
I call them like I see them.
No, not at all. They will have no more clout after than before. Don't sweat it - we have a lot of work to do.
We did what we could for Terri - her attys didn't deliver. Any fixation with the case is counterproductive.
The News media has not given all of the true facts to the public. To with hold the truth is as bad as lying. I now have contempt for ABC, CBS, CNN, and Fox as well. I am now seeing the need for me to contribute to Free Republic, where people have their say.
There was a famous postcard that circulated during the slavery abolition movement days, showing a slave who had been bloodily whipped and titled "his master's property". Terri is that postcard for the anti-deathers movement. They will not let it slip.
The polls said that impeaching Clinton was unpopular. But the GOP didn't lose Congress, and Bush was elected two years later.
Yep, and election night exit polls declared John Kerry the winner but it didn't happen that way. I just get the feeling that the media is hoping that we've already forgotten how fallible their polls are.
I agree that teh media did not communicate this well, but that's still not an excuse. It is incumbent on our side to get the message out, since we can be fairly sure that the media won't do it.
As for how, I can't say. But it is time for some creative thinking. Blaming the media is accurate and legitimate, but I stress it is not an excuse.
We need to do better.
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
It's over.
>>It's over.
Perhaps in your world. There's still the 11th Circus en banc, then the SCOTUS...
No doubt in my mind about it. Sides, the Left can't have it both ways. They can't, on the one hand, smear Bush as a "right-wing" ideological extremist; then, on the other, say he believes none of that stuff.
The Florida legislature will likely come up with a compromise at the 11th hour. This ain't over by a long shot.
