Actually Acetone is one of the lesser hazards as far as chemicals go.

" Hazard Rankings
Less hazardous than most chemicals in 10 ranking systems.
Acetone is one of the least toxic of the many organic solvents used in the work place. Its toxicity is low for both acute and chronic exposures. However, prolonged inhalation of high concentrations of acetone vapor causes irritation of the respiratory tract, headache, loss of memory, and in extreme cases, unconsciousness. Other symptoms of acetone intoxication include dizziness, nausea, or drowsiness. Continued skin contact may produce a mild form of dermatitis."

What acetone is though is extremely flamable. It has a very low flash point of 4 degrees F. Lacquer thinner has other chemicals in it that make it hazardous for humans.
Acetone will strip the paint and just about anything else off of anything. Acetone sometimes evaporates too quickly for paint stripping.

It costs more than gasoline per gallon.

Laquer thinner is 11 on the Clova Toxicity scale. Acetone and all the other Keytone group chemicals and Toloene are ranked near the top Clova 42. You find these solvents in everything now including furniture wax.

Nasty, Nasty stuff.

Yes and Acetone will melt resin and rubber hoses and seals in your fuel system.
