Senators Kennedy, Clinton, Schumer, Lautenberg, Feinstein do not get up in the night, sign no bill, remain asleep. Film at eleven.

THE 1990s VERSION

Q Can you go over what went on last night, in terms of the President signing the bill and how it went down?

WHITE HOUSE: Sure. I guess the bill -- the House passed it shortly after midnight, and then the President vetoed it at 1:11 a.m., in the morning. The Staff Secretary walked the legislation over to the residence for the President to veto. He came outside his bedroom and tore it up in the residence.

Q: Had he been asleep?

A: Yes. (wink wink) He was interrupted, I mean, woken up after it was passed, when it was ready to be signed.

Q: I heard you describe it earlier, he came out of his bedroom and literally vetoed it standing up in the hall; is that how it went?

A: That's correct, yes. He was just standing in the hall in the residence and stamped the veto on the legislation, using Ms. Lewenski's back for a surface.

Q Was he wearing --

Q Is it safe to assume he wasn't wearing a suit and tie at the time? (Laughter.)

MR. McCLELLAN: I'm not going into that much detail. Yes, he cleaned up, no suit, just a tie and socks. -- (laughter.)

the President signed it at 1:11 a.m., in the morning.

As opposed to 1:11 a.m. in the afternoon?

God Bless our President.

Oh, and I also wasn't aware we had a limit on how much a certain subject could be discussed. Probably because there is no such limit. People don't like it, Tough. There are certain subjects I get tired of dominating discussion, but I don't whine about it. You just scan over it rather than invade the thread.

You have to wonder where the presidential staff secretary would have found Bill Clinton in the middle of the night!
