The Midnight Coup (Los Angeles Slimes MEGA-BARF Alert)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 03/21/05 | Los Angeles Times Editorial

Posted on 03/21/2005 1:30:35 AM PST by goldstategop

Republican leaders, eyeing an opportunity to appease their radical right-wing constituents, convened Congress over the weekend to shamelessly interject the federal government into the wrenching Schiavo family dispute. They brushed aside our federalist system of government, which assigns the resolution of such disputes to state law, and state judges. Even President Bush flew back from his ranch to Washington on Sunday to be in on what amounts to a constitutional coup d'etat. ....

Congress does act in other extraordinary cases on behalf of a specific individual, such as when it grants someone U.S. citizenship. But here, Congress is breaking new ground, trying to overturn a judicial decision by altering the Constitution's federalist scheme. This is the family law equivalent of the constitutionally banned "bill of attainder," legislation that seeks to convict someone of a crime.

Yes, my friend, the tanks are in the streets and the Democrats are in concentration camps. You gotta wonder how this editorial got published if our constitutional form of government is gone already.

Uh huh. Don't worry, they will NEVER get it. Its proof the Left doesn't understand the values of Red State voters. They're a bunch of power-hungry, amoral, posturing phonies.

If a liberal Democrat were standing in the road about to be hit by a car and a Republican screamed at them to move because they were in danger, the liberal Democrat would probably shoot the Republican the finger and be killed.

The left is scared silly that this issue will play out to the benefit of the pro-life group. They let their fear blind them to the possibility it will really boomarang badly for them.

They're angrier Congress protected its constitutional prerogatives than they're angry at the judge for exceeding the limits of his lawful authority. Liberals certainly do have their priorities in order.

A normal legislative process is described as the equivalent of a coup d'etat against the Constitution

It IS a coup d'etat against the "Constitution". But it is not against the Constitution written in 1787 and amended 27 times. It is a coup against the "living Constitution" embodied in the whims of courts bent on implimenting a leftist social agenda on America through court order. It is a small shot in a counter-coup that says to at least a state court that you WILL listen to the will of the people in the other two branches.

Not too worried actually. I made the comment earlier during the House debate that the Democrats faux-Pro-Life arguments were a bit galling.

Yeah, really. And here they were making noises about respecting pro-life voters' views. Turns out it really was just a bunch of pure Barbara Streisand. In other words, a Democratic snow job.

Like El Rushbo says, good news for America is bad news for the Democrats. The LAT editorial tells me the Left is in mourning. I can only imagine the mood over at DU today.

It is interesting....by using "radical" Kinsley et al will immediately turn off all the people he is trying to reach. The death cult leftists need to realize that they lost big in 2004 and they will lose big in 2006 if they continue their ways. No one reads the LA Times editorials except for those who agree with its leftist agenda.

This also has implications for the WoT, abortion and many other issues.

Yes it does ;-)

Don't forget judicial tyranny.

While the have the momentum we need to end this once and for all.

This case is one of the most ridiculous cases I have seen in my entire life. There is no better example of judicial tyranny.

from a single unelected judge under cover of darkness.

In the interest of honesty, Judge Greer was elected and by a wide margin in November. But who pays attention to judges' races? More people should.

Liberals are usually gung-ho for giving the courts at all levels more authority. Not this time. Its an eevil Republican plot to eliminate "choice" in this country. That's why the LAT is enraged at what Congress did this morning.

My thinking exactly. I nearly had to collect my jaw off the living room carpet when I read that the L.A. Slimes now stridently supports states' rights. Now I'd like to know where they stand on the many other issues that have been yanked unconstitutionally out of the hands of the states by the federal courts. Or could it be that their newfound support for states' rights is limited to life and death cases in which the state supports the latter?

I read elsewhere that the vote in the house was 208 - 53, which hardly sounds to me like the work of a right-wing lunatic fringe. Even many (but sadly, not enough) Dummycrats supported the bill, which is nothing more or less than a last-ditch effort to save the life of a vulnerable human being.

and accused Flyover Country of crassly political motives in Terri Schiavo's case

Ok Michael, have it your way. This is not about morality, it is about vote counts. So what - you are still a loser.
