Florida judge embroiled in right-to-die dispute
International Herald Tribune ^ | March 18. 2005 | Abby Goodnough

MIAMI For most of his career, Judge George Greer presided over mundane local disputes that drew little notice outside Pinellas County, Florida, or even his courtroom. People who know him say he considers himself a "compassionate conservative," a man whose religious faith is as dear to him as his reputation as a legal scholar. . Now, though, the placid Florida Circuit Court judge is at the center of one of the nation's most contentious civil cases, the battle over whether to withdraw the feeding tube of a critically brain-damaged woman, Terri Schiavo. The case has made Greer a target of religious conservatives and others who object to ending any life prematurely.

He resigned from his Southern Baptist church and lately travels under police protection; he doesn't even go to lunch unaccompanied. . No matter that the case has gone on for seven years, traveling all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. It always returns to Greer, 63, who Friday ordered that Schiavo's feeding tube be removed. His finding that Schiavo would rather die than be kept alive artificially, based on testimony from her husband, Michael, has drawn protest from around the world. Opponents have sent hundreds of letters and e-mail messages to the judge, picketed his courthouse in Clearwater, and, in a few cases, friends said, threatened his life.

He stopped attending his longtime church, Calvary Baptist in Clearwater, in 2003 after it sent a publication to the congregation sharply criticizing him. . Now, as protestors descend on Pinellas County, where Schiavo resides in a suburban hospice, and Tallahassee, where they are lobbying Governor Jeb Bush and the legislature.

He resigned from his Southern Baptist church and lately travels under police protection; he doesn't even go to lunch unaccompanied. .

I have a sister (52 years old),who, over the years, has become more and more democrat, feminist, Christian-hating, and man-hating. She has a fascination with other peoples' sex lives and aberrant sexual conditions and practices. I know this because she talks about all of the above, a lot. She also lies a lot and very easily.

I am not certain why this has happened to her, but I have had to decrease my interactions with her because of it. I also wrote her a letter asking her to stop bringing up these subjects constantly and stop the lying. She called me up and cried and told me the letter hurt her feelings!!!

My sister is also strongly pro-abortion and pro-euthanasia. I have gradually become convinced, to my sorrow, that she actually gets off on the whole evil business of sentencing innocent people to death as well as from many other vices. There is something she just loves about pure evil, and I have begun to feel that this is truly satanic. It chills me.

YOU had better have a "Living Will," because if no one else is available, Sister Dearest will be in charge of your medical care, including but not limited
to: food, water, vitamins, medicine, surgery, therapy, visitation, religious
practice, etc.

As they grow older, most people seem to become more conservative. But judges apparently defy this norm. (Look at that nutcase Kennedy on the Supreme Court!) Maybe they see it as their last chance to play God before they actually have to meet the Real Thing.

Think about this.

Legislature makes a law, Judges can overrule. ( And do often)
Judges makes a law change, Legislature can't overrule. Happens all the time.

President Bush, can't do a damn thing but veto.

What happened to a government, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, etc. Looks like the Judges are the law, lawmakers, are superior rulers. It will be a cold day in hell before I will ever address them "Your Honor". They can take their black robes and go to their commander in chief, the devil. We are in serious trouble if our elected Representatives and told to get lost by a sick incompetent judge.

I grieve for you. Unless God grants them the mercy, once they turn the corner of evil willingly it's almost impossible for them to come back. I noticed in the article that Greer "considers himself...." and that's part of the problem.

He's lost and cannot see it. He's not the first to do evil and relish within the power of it. It's always a very sad thing. You have already noticed your sister got worse and worse...it's like evil feeds upon evil to exist...

This should be a warning to those believers who date non-believers. It's a hard cruel world as it is and often believers hurt believers... yet they can reconcile...If a non-believer hurts a believer, the non-believer often never sees what he or she has done.

Maybe some good will come of this episode. If one couple - just one young man or woman realizes their intended mate is not on the same page as they are and end the relationship so future hell may be avoided for him or her.

You have my wishes and prayers for you, your sister and your family.

Any man or woman who has to give up their regular live in order to watch their back has to know they are living outside any acceptable moral code. Judge Freak is too pompous to call himself a "compassionate" anything. I hope the rest of his life is as miserable as Terri's family will be.

His book deal will be worth millions more if she dies. If he'd ruled long ago in Terry's favor, it would have gone away quietly. Watch your bookshelves. Same for that creepy little attorney too. What a hypocrite to say this was a political move by different factions and then numerous times mentioned the MINORITY party that would always be a minority if they didn't step in and make him look good. (paraphrased)

This judge has to be a moron. To let Michael Chiavo be the guardian after a 5 month marriage and all the bias he has exhibited from allegations of spousal abuse to living with another woman and having two children this guy broke his marriage vows years ago. Where the hell has this judge been. He is out of it. He may also be in violation of congressional law before it's all over.

What happened to a government, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, etc.

That was a long time ago. Did you sleep through 10th grade history class??

This is the New Age. One World. All of our decisions are made for us. If we don't fall in line, at least our children or their children will become conditioned to it. Our grandchildren won't need to elect representatives because we have the courts. Turn this entire dog and pony show over to the courts.

Greer has made a name for himself. If Terri dies, the name "Judge Greer" is worth untold millions more than if she lives.

I feel better now. Thanks. :-)

...in recent weeks, after threats, at least two sheriff's deputies have escorted him almost everywhere.

Thank you Flordia taxpayers! Mikey should pay for this out of Terri's settlement too, instead of pick pocketing working people. Of course Mikey already blew the whole wad on having his wife put to death while denying her an attorney or even medical care. I hope God lets Terri meet them all at the Pearly Gates and lets her decide what to do with them.

You know what I meant. You're being cocky.

The president and vice preseident have protection simply because of who they are. Judge Death has protection only because of this one case.

Make sure you have someone to look after you with love if something happens to you. Power of attorney is the most solid choice you can make. Many so-called "living wills" are simply signed approvals for them to kill you.

I think that you are right about living wills. They can be an
exuse for an evil one to put you to death, if they are so minded.
