Sen. Robert Byrd said Wednesday hes "inclined to run" next year for the Senate seat hes held since 1959.
"Im inclined to run, but Im not making any announcement today," said Byrd, who has spent 52 years in Congress, longer than anyone currently serving. "Im studying about it, thinking about it, talking about it with my friends and people in West Virginia."
Byrd, 87, long has been considered virtually unbeatable in West Virginia, a state to which he has directed billions of dollars in federal money.
The eight-term senator has been Senate majority leader and the chairman of the check-writing Appropriations Committee.
Hes known for his deep knowledge of the Constitution and is the most ardent champion of Senate tradition.

Sen. Byrd wants to make sure a Democrat gets appointed when he finally croaks. Otherwise if he retired, a Republican could probably win an open seat in West Virginia.

Any mention of Robert Byrd must include his Democrat party affiliation and his history, as in "Democrat Senator Robert "Sheets" Byrd, former KKK recruiter and current moral spokesman for the Democrat Party" ...

I've had 4 neighbors die in the last week -- all of them younger than Byrd. All of my neighbors were excellent men and died too young. I won't say the rest...

You just stumbled on the secret of eternal life. Decent people do die, but scoundrels tend not to (or at least, they die so infrequently that nobody could remember the last time it happened).
Thus one could easily increase one's longevity by becoming a dyed-in-the-wool scoundrel (superficial scoundrelization is a fake and would not work, only the genuine article will do).

Well, I don't know about you guys, but I hope "Sheets" byrd is more horizontal than inclined before he gets a chance to run again.

I wonder if he will consult his dog Billy before making his final decision? He used to reference Billy in many senate speeches.
Word is, Rep. Shelly Moore Capito, R, Wv, is itching to take him on.
