House Majority Leader Tom DeLay pledged Friday to hold Florida state judge George Greer in contempt of Congress for ignoring a congressional subpoena for Terri Schiavo's testimony, saying, "No little judge sitting in a state district court in Florida is going to usurp the authority of Congress."
"The Congress will pursue this, if we have to hold him in contempt of Congress," DeLay told radio host Sean Hannity.
Pressed on whether he intended to hold Judge Greer in contempt, the top Republican told Hannity: "Absolutely, absolutely."
"We will do everything to enforce the power and authority of the Congress and no little judge sitting in a state district court in Florida is going to usurp the authority of Congress," he added.
Earlier in the day Judge Greer rebuffed the Schiavo subpoena, telling attorneys in the case, "I have had no cogent reason why the [congressional] committee should intervene." He claimed that the last-minute action on the part of Congress does not nullify years of legal proceedings.
But DeLay told Hannity, "This judge and the Supreme Court of Florida are well known to be liberal judges that have a different worldview and they're imposing their worldview on the law."
The top House leader said that "no sane person" could look at Schiavo and say she's in a persistent vegetative state.
DeLay called a lawyer for Michael Schiavo, who has pressed for years to have his wife starved to death, "the personification of evil."
Thank you for being where many of us cannot.
And, IMO, that thinking is only going to get worse, unless the Lord tarries.
If so, we would expect it to be for a more seemly reason than that she has been starved to death. Hino has not allowed her swallowing therapy.
The problem with your post is that you are talking about you. This is not about you, your wishes, your fantasies.
I have heard so many people who had thought the same way you did who fought to the end. You see it everyday. People going thru what you or I say we would never endure and going through it willingly.
People say very casually "oh I would rather die" or "kill me rather than make me go through such and such" but when the time comes, they go through it, fighting often, enduring poisons in their bodies, vomiting, getting skeletal and do not give up. Dying and chosing to die is something that is very very hard to do. It is easier to talk about than do. I know this is true, I have watched it a lot.
And there you have it.
I wouldn't call what Delay has done, unscrupulous. Congress is saying, "so you say she's a veggie, well bring her down here in a produce basket so we can see for ourselves."
I had a live link going on the computer when he gave a press conferance after they pulled the tube. He was like a raving maniac talking about the congress trying to stop the process and calling on all the democrats to make sure it doesn't happen again.
You are right. If there were a living will, this would have been avoided, I think.
I plan to give everything away before I start to get in the death age if I hold out. I don't want my children thinking about my estate dribbling away.
I have wondered if people really truly comprehend what they are signing when they sign it. How can one contemplate death when it is not upon one? I cannot tell you how many people change their minds and go through hell to live. Dying is not easy, it really isn't for most people.
Wasn't it Delay who called Felos "evil personified" earlier today? I think so
Michael's determination to prevent any observation of Terri's true condition by disinterested observers strongly suggests one thing: he knows her condition is much better than he lets on. He's not trying to kill Terri because she's PVS, but because he knows da?n well she isn't.
If this case is allowed to stand, any guardian of an incapacitated person who wants the ward dead will be able to inject them with some morphine, get them declared PVS, invent some claims about their "wishes", and starve them to death.
If you don't believe that, explain what safeguards exist that would prevent exactly the scenario I described.
Silly Servant-! Oh, Child of darkness, child of night, wish you away with all that's right! May you be touched with the joy you deprive -- because of your mind you'd sooner be blind!
The law, even in Florida, stated that Terri should have HER OWN ATTORNEY to represent HER interests. Greer violated the law.
You are right. I witnessed it first hand. But it will be for me. I am at once both intellectual and hard wiring about this one. The timing of death is of little consequence for me. I just want to get it right. Granted, if I can live well and happily to 110, I won't be sad.
I wouldn't either, but some others were complaining about the precedent this will set if we let Congress interfere in this fashion.
I know the DOI isn't the Constitution, but if the government does not exist to protect people's inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, what is it for?
How about they listen to what the estranged husband said to one of his girlfriends.

Regarding that alleged conversation [that Terri supposedly said she would want to die in such a situation] -- Cindy Shook said that Michael Schiavo said:
"How the hell should I know, we never spoke about this, we were young."

I don't think the left want to "nail her to a tree". I think the left just wants to let people let others die if they think it is best. Or if the people they want to let die are very inconvenient. I think the left does not want this public spectacle. They prefer their killing to be done quietly with broad acceptance. I truly believe many do not see what a slippery slope they are on.
It seems t me that this is part of the leftist notions that we should all do whatever makes us feel good, no matter what the cost to others.
And apparently didn't care enough AT THE TIME to ask those relatives of his who later sang beautifully in court about her purported wish. Gag, retch, blech.
It is mighty stange that Michael didn't remember her saying she didn't want to be on life support until after he testified that he wanted to take care of her the rest of his life and then he won the million dollar lawsuit.

Sorry about you Mom.
You make a good point. The hospital staff will ask about your intentions, but probably gloss over what exactly that means. In my days of working in the hospital I helped at over 200 cardiac arrests. We probably 'brought back' close to 2/3rds of them and most of them needed some time on the machines and they walked out in much better shape.
I'm sure that in today's setting, those who walked in on their own would routinely turn down the 'extra measures' thinking it meant one thing when it meant another and they would die unnecessarily.
