DeLay Pledges Contempt Charge for Terri Judge

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay pledged Friday to hold Florida state judge George Greer in contempt of Congress for ignoring a congressional subpoena for Terri Schiavo's testimony, saying, "No little judge sitting in a state district court in Florida is going to usurp the authority of Congress."

"The Congress will pursue this, if we have to hold him in contempt of Congress," DeLay told radio host Sean Hannity.

Pressed on whether he intended to hold Judge Greer in contempt, the top Republican told Hannity: "Absolutely, absolutely."

"We will do everything to enforce the power and authority of the Congress and no little judge sitting in a state district court in Florida is going to usurp the authority of Congress," he added.

Earlier in the day Judge Greer rebuffed the Schiavo subpoena, telling attorneys in the case, "I have had no cogent reason why the [congressional] committee should intervene." He claimed that the last-minute action on the part of Congress does not nullify years of legal proceedings.

But DeLay told Hannity, "This judge and the Supreme Court of Florida are well known to be liberal judges that have a different worldview and they're imposing their worldview on the law."

The top House leader said that "no sane person" could look at Schiavo and say she's in a persistent vegetative state.

DeLay called a lawyer for Michael Schiavo, who has pressed for years to have his wife starved to death, "the personification of evil."

I would never threaten you. I'm not that kind of person. However, you've been here long enough to know that JimRob has stated publicly that this is not a neutral forum -- that it is God-loving or God-fearing -- I forget exactly which term he used.

You should know better than to say something like that. It's nothing more than crude flame-baiting, and I've seen enough of your posts on other issues to know that you're smart enough to know that.

It doesn't make sense. Since he's already violated his marriage vows by living with another woman and having children with her, isn't there a way to get a divorce decree to legally divorce Michael and Terri?

If Terri were allowed an honest guardian, she would have been divorced years ago. If Terri were allowed an honest judge, the HINO would have been disqualified as guardian years ago, thus paving the way for an honest guardian to get a divorce.

Excellent analysis.
You have to be blind not to take into consideration what a dirtbag Terri's husband is. He wants her dead. Allegations are he strangled her causing her to wind up this way. Other allegations(unsubstantiated but in a case like this should be considered) are that she was undergoing therapy and he had it stopped. This guy,her husband, is a turd and needs to be flushed.

Why can't you leave it to her husband as it should be?

The facts are that the husband has been living with other women since shortly after Terri's 'accident'. FACT! WHAT DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND ABOUT THAT CONFLICT OF INTEREST?

The parents had two court cases to try to prove conflict and then two appeals all the way to the US Supreme Court. Not a single Judge thought they had a case.

WHAT DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND ABOUT IT'S THE LAW.

this "man" lives with another women,

Am I right in thinking Michael has publicly described her as his fiancee and/or he has said they are engaged?

What a weird man, "engaged" to one woman while he is arranging to kill his wife.

Well, well. Looks like the same people who condemned Roy Moore as an Anarchist for refusing to obey an unconstitutional order are now defending Judge Greer's lawlessness.

If I don't know, it's because I've been through a lifetime of problems in the past two years...not to mention 2 months. I've done the research, and knew at one time.

If you don't know, try doing the research.

I plan on having as nice a day as one can have while someone's spouse is starving her to death with a nod from the judiciary. Hope your night is even better, considering you don't feel the way I do.

This is a message I received from a congressman friend about an hour ago:

" just got off the phone with the Judiciary Committee. Sensenbrenner has cancelled his trip to Australia and all leadership hands (House & Senate) are on deck at the Capitol right now. We have little faith that Florida will get a solution and we disagree across the rotunda on what version works. I am hopeful that a solution will be reached tonight and I expect that we will come back to town on Monday for a vote on a private bill for Terri Schiavo.

The Florida district judge that ordered her tubes removed must take a serious fall. He is in contempt of Congress and will likely find himself delivered here by the Department of Justice. I see this as the call of the trumpet to jerk the judges back to their Constitutional authority and reestablish the power of the legislative branch.

Say a prayer for a miracle. It would sure simplify this effort."

I am beginning to think that the FL State Senate is made up of 80 percent clones of the popular George W. Greer.

Oh, the rationale was the right to privacy to have self determination. And that right exists via oral statements if the evidence is clear and convincing. Silly me. How could I have missed such an obvious right?

Of course, if we respected "states rights," blacks would still be picking cotton on Massa's farm

Were not talking about state rights. Congress has intervened in that they want to investigate further. If Teri is not PVS and deserves to live then Congress has the responsibility to ensure her right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Christopher Reeves was still 'in there' unlike Terri.

And you know Terri's not 'in there'...how? People have "woken up" from worse and claimed to have been fully aware the entire time.

I don't see sufficient nexus between what's happening to Terri and any federal rights she might have. That's not to say that you can't argue that she has some under the 14th amendment, but if you carry that argument too far, the states no longer exist except for road signs.

Personally, I don't think a ruling that you don't have the right to deny nourishment to yourself unless you express that in writing is a good idea. That's unprecedented and a huge intrusion on the family. That's not going to be a popular opinion on these threads tonight but normally that wouldn't be controversial here.

Exactly. It is frightening that someone so repulsive as Michael has been allowed to be Terri's guardian. Doesn't matter that he is an estranged husband (with a live-in mistress at that). Sunny von Bulow's husband Claus was not allowed to be her guardian because of conflict of interest.

The parents had two court cases to try to prove conflict

Which judges were involved and what were the findings?
