Teen girls' Bible talks of oral sex, lesbianism: smears 'filthy graffiti across the Word of God'

Bible created especially for girls age 13-16 that includes profiles of fictional teenagers discussing oral sex, lesbianism and "dream" guys is drawing sharp criticism from some Christian parents who say such material should not appear alongside Scripture.

The "True Images" Bible, published by Zondervan, promises on its dustcover to "strengthen your relationship with God, family, friends and guys."

While the book includes the entire text of the New International Version of the Bible, it's the "over 1,000 relevant and compelling notes and articles" that have critics upset.

The "In Focus" profiles are peppered throughout the text of the Bible and deal with subjects like sex, pregnancy, alcoholism, dating, homosexuality, depression, pornography and flirting.

An introduction in the Bible explains its goal: to present to young girls "true images": "God's message about who you are in his eyes."

The "In Focus" article on sex appears amidst scriptural regulations on offerings in the book of Leviticus. It profiles the fictional girl "Ashley" and is entitled "Casual or Not?"

While the message of the profile is to save sex for marriage, critics aren't convinced the frank-talk approach is appropriate for young teens.

Discussing her friend "Emma," Ashley says, "The story is that she had oral sex with a guy friend of ours last week. Just for fun. They're not dating, although they've always flirted with each other a lot. Emma took one look at my face this morning, and she knew I knew."

Emma goes on to claim that oral sex "is not even sex," but Ashley disagrees, saying, "God's definition of sexual purity covers much more than intercourse."

Following Ashley's narrative is a warning that "the physical and emotional effects of oral sex are similar to intercourse," along with tips for dealing with friends who are engaging in the practice.

I have no idea why you decided to mention Rick Warren in this thread. If you want to discuss Warren I suggest you stick with the ongoing threads on the subject or start your own. I've checked out Rick Warren and not only found him innocent of the charges many level against him, but found his Purpose Driven Life book inspiring.

The Saturday quickie you describe sounds more like a selfish act of gratification than good stewardship of the gift of sexual love that God gives to us.

Not to condemn you - but to point out that our failure to always do what is right/righteuous is simply evidence of the fall, and it should not be offered as an excuse or justification for our sin.

These issues need to be dealt with, just not in the way this book does.

BUT, the problem is, the people most offended by this book are the very people who will avoid dealing with these issues.

You have not checked very deeply at all.
I have a lot to do this weekend,so I will not get back to you right away.
I will send you some information that may change your mind about Rick Warren
Jesus should be followed.
NOT RICK WARREN!
Rick Warren is using Eastern Mysticism.
It is very easy to expose.

The Bible avoids graphic descriptions of sexual sins.

Re-read Song of Solomon, Ezekiel 23, and Hosea, and tell me that those aren't "graphic."

I have read the Bible passages you cited. They are tasteful.

And, by the way, Song of Solomon is not describing sexual sin.

We are aware of many egregious offenses in the Bible - cannibalism, necrophilia, sodomy, murder, disrespect for authority - which are described adequately to know what they are, but not in a way to make them appealing.

The notes added to this per-version of the Bible are not, and stray from the Biblical command to guard our thoughts.

Phil.4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

jude24, you should read Jude 4-8.

God has a severe warning about people like these Bible peddlers.

"Without guidance, the Bible is easily misinterpreted"

I see others have called you out on this. No need to do so again.

I don't think you can say Bible and nonjudgmental treatment of sexual topics in the same breath. Does the angels' side always win out in these discussions? If it doesn't then shame shame SHAME on Zondervan.

As P-Marlowe asked you, don't bother, but you still ignored his request. And please don't insult my intelligence by saying I didn't check very deeply.

By saying Jesus should be followed and not Rick Warren, you demonstrate a profound ignorance of what Rick Warren teaches. Don't send me anything. Don't post to me again.

Life is too short to waste it arguing with well meaning but misguided people like you. Before this post you had already made my prayer list, and I will keep you on it through-out March, 2005.

Count me among those offended by this book. And I do and will confront such issues as these directly. I have been forced to speak out for worse things.

I know others who deal with them too. They would not have anything to do with a book like this.

I can tell you that the way oral sex is described here fails to give the kind of strong warning that should go along with what happened. Plus it adds unnecessarily explicit details. Why is it necessary to describe a perverted sexual act? It is not.

It is enough to use Biblical words like fornication, adultery, inordinate affection, lasciviousness, concupiscence, reprobation, defrauding, covetousness and such.

Many Christians know what oral sex is, but cannot tell what these Biblical terms mean. It should be the other way around.

Rom.16:19 ...I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.

2Cor.11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

Godly knowledge follows virtue.

Indeed I did, and suggesting using Roman Catholic materials as a guide to understanding the Bible is a sure way to undermine the Word of God in the hearts of weak or new Christians.

The New Testament is "Roman Catholic materials."

I guess so if you support Idolatry and the putting the false traditions of Man ahead of the Word of God. No offense.

LOL -you get out much?
