Efforts to prevent the death of Terri Schiavo hit roadblock

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Last-ditch efforts to block the removal of Terri Schiavo's feeding tube foundered
today as courts rebuffed her parents' appeals and lawmakers failed to agree on legislation to intervene
in the contentious battle to keep the severely brain-damaged woman alive.

Unless a court or lawmakers step in, Michael Schiavo can have doctors remove his wife's feeding tube at 1 p-
m tomorrow against her parents' wishes, ending the long-running right-to-die drama.

Lawmakers in Tallahassee and Washington wrestled unsuccessfully today with legislation intended to keep
her alive. And legal avenues were shut down by the state and U-S Supreme courts, diminishing hopes for a
solution to block her husband before the deadline.

The attorney for Terri Schiavo's parents says he will ask a federal judge in a habeas corpus filing tomorrow
in Tampa to block the removal and review the actions of state courts.

Such appeals are most commonly used in death penalty cases when legal appeals have been exhausted. They
require the government to justify its actions.

The Florida attorney general's office usually defends the state against habeas filings.
