Senate Judiciary Committee Resends Blocked Bush Judge Nominees

Republicans on Thursday cleared the first of President Bush's blocked judicial nominees for Senate approval, a move that Democrats say could lead to a filibuster confrontation that could shut the chamber down.

The GOP-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee (news - web sites) on a 10-8 party line vote agreed to send the nomination of former Interior lawyer William Myers to the full Senate for approval.

While Republicans say Myers, who now is in practice as a private lawyer in Boise, Idaho, would make a good judge on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Democrats claimed that he is too anti-environment.

Democrats blocked Myers's nomination during the last Congress, and say they will do the same this year. "The Myers nomination is likely to be used as the trigger for the nuclear option," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.

Republicans have threatened to change the Senate rules to stop Democrats from blocking judicial nominees, a move Democrats have dubbed the "nuclear option" because they say it would blow up Senate relations.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada on Tuesday threatened to cripple Senate operations if Republicans tried to stop them from filibustering Myers and other court nominations.

The Myers nomination will not be considered by the full chamber until after senators return from their Easter recess.

Will it continue?

Looks like N-Day has a date now.

Bring it on Harry! Time to get the playing field even again. 50-50 up or down dear Senator!

No recess for the LIBs. Isn't there a separation of Church and State in the Constitution according to them?

My bet: Frist is trying to bluff Reid who has already bluffed Frist.

Next will come bluster. Then bloviation.

But I doubt Frist and co will ever call for a vote to change the rules. Frist doesn't have it in him. He will ride along, hoping something better in '06.

Ya' know, waiting until after Easter could be a good thing. Frist can stuff a couple of eggs into his Fruit-of-the-Looms and at least give the appearance that he has stones.

If we go down this line why Fearless Frist would come up flat. His excuse - I didn't know ya had to boil the eggs. (A guy who went from a good doctor to a enfeebled buffoon)

These CRATS are sick. Since they are the minority, it is their responsibility to work with the majority to run government effectively. They are obstructionist only and that is their problem. Republicans should just ignore this sick party and move on as fast as possible. We only have about 3 and 3/4 years to try to undo their crap. Hopefully the CRATS will implore before then and we elect more Republicans and the new Republican president.

I don't care how they do it, as long as they do it.

I just hope for two things, timely approval and no compromises with the leftists.

Specter can do a lot of damage just by delaying the process. We have only a small window of opportunity here, over the next two to four years, and need to take full advantage of it. Clinton had eight years to pack the courts with activists, and earlier appointments were not good either, since Republicans compromised and Democrats pushed for extremists. So you tended to get one RINO judge and then one far-left judge, even under Republican presidents.

No more compromises. So far Bush has been good about this, with the result that hardly any appointments were made in his first term. He doesn't owe the Democrats a damn thing. He needs to put in a whole slew of judges who are fully as conservative as Ruth Bader Ginsberg is liberal. No more half measures.

Either the Democrats do a real filibuster or sit down and shut up and let the Senate vote on the nominees.
