Russia has condemned a Wednesday march in Riga, the Latvian capital, by SS Nazi war veterans, Interfax news agency reported.

The procession was held by former members of the Latvian SS Legion -- a unit that fought with the Nazis during World War II -- and it was supported by other Latvian radical nationalist groups, Interfax said.

The Russian side has repeatedly qualified such actions as immoral and unacceptable, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement quoted by Interfax.

It is especially cynical that they are permitted by the authorities, which, ahead of the 60th anniversary of the Great Victory (over Nazi Germany in May 1945), are persistently seeking support in European capitals for Riga's course to review the results of World War II and the verdict of the Nuremberg Tribunal, which declared the SS a criminal organization, the statement said.

Perverse logic is the only possible explanation for the situation where the legionaries march in the center of the Latvian capital, while police use force against anti-fascists, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. All this happens in modern Latvia, which, as is claimed in the European Union, fully conforms to the Copenhagen criteria for democracy, the ministry said.

I don't know if this NEBUCHADNEZZAR1961 is saying he supports Nazis; but I also think that the Russians have no business criticizing Nazis marching, when in Russia the communists, including members of the 'old guard' march whenever they want.

There have been a whole host of newbies who all signed up right in the middle of Feb, most of whom have been banned. Some were calling for America's right to exterminate the Chinese, others were pushing socialist economies. Also, there have been plenty of Stormfront and other types here protesting anyone protesting the Nazis.

Very true, they do march when they get their permits, but from what I understand of this one, it was a government sponsored and police protected march, now that is something you won't see in Russia.

First, most of those who are guilty for the Soviets killed each other, but that's besides the point. Thousands of Germans? More like a few hundred of the most vicious. If the Soviet NKVD men were given a state parade I'd be condemning it just as viciously and if the Germans or Italians or Croatians complained about it, I'd say they had every right to complain about it.

Lets not forget that 20 million Soviet people, the vast majority civilians, were butchered by the Nazis, those same old men who are being given a hero's welcome.

THE SKIATAWA MASSACRE (Sunday November 30, 1941)

The prime mover behind the expulsion of Berlin's Jews was Albert Speer, Hitler's chief architect who had been given the task of rebuilding Berlin. A close friend of Joseph Goebbels, together in 1941, they planned for the clearance of the Jewish slum areas in the western part of the city. In doing so, Speer could then take control of around 34,000 houses and apartments and start his demolishing and rebuilding programme. The first trainload of these expelled Jews left Berlin on October 18, 1941. There were to be 130 trainloads altogether. On November 7, a train, No. Do-26, loaded with 943 Jews left the city bound for Riga in Latvia. Arriving at 9.30am in Skiatawa , about eight kilometres outside Riga, in zero temperatures and three inches of snow on the ground, they were forced out of the train and shot into deep trenches previously dug in a strip of the Rumbula Forest. The executions were supervised by SS Major Rudolf Lange but the actual shooting was carried out by the local Latvian SS troops. Later that day around 4,000 local Jews from Riga itself were transported by trucks to the forest and murdered in the same way at the same spot on the orders of the local SS Commander Friedrich Jeckeln. (By the beginning of 1942, Jeckeln was credited with reducing the Jewish population of Riga from 29,500 to 2,600) This massacre was witnessed by Major General Walter Bruns, a 54 year old German Army bridge building engineer whose testimony is on file at the Public Records Office in London. At the 'Wolf's Lair', Hitler had given instructions to Himmler that the Berlin Jews were not to be liquidated but they were all dead by the time the order came through.

RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY OUTRAGED OVER HONORING LATVIAN SS. The Russian government has expressed outrage over the opening of a memorial cemetery for Latvians who fought in Nazi Waffen SS forces during World War II, Interfax reported on September 29. The memorial was opened outside Riga on September 27. "The tradition of paying tribute to victims of World War II is a normal thing which needs no comment," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement it circulated. "But opening a memorial for Latvia's Waffen SS soldiers is yet another attempt to distort history and to instigate ethnic enmity and hatred of Russia." The Foreign Ministry denied that those who served in the Waffen SS 19th and 15th divisions fought only at the front. "Archives suggest," the statement said, "that the Latvian Legion which, incidentally, took an oath of allegiance to Hitler, was attached to Hitler's SD security police in 1943-45 and is remembered for its notoriously punitive actions in Latvia, Russia, and Belarus. These 'heroes' took part in massive executions and guarded Nazi death camps." The statement expressed surprise that "not only national-radical forces, but also other Latvian political, public and religious figures, including the Latvian culture minister and the Defense Ministry official for Latvia's integration with NATO, supported the revanchist tonality of the event. The military honors provided by the national armed forces to those who served Nazi Germany go beyond the generally accepted European standards."
