MOSCOW - The majority of Russians (61 percent) dislike perestroika initiated by USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev, as polls held by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM) have shown. 14 percent of respondents approve it and 13 percent of Russians say they are not interested with perestroika. The polls were held in 100 Russian cities, towns and villages on March 5-6, 2005, 20 years after perestroika. 1,600 people were questioned.

About 23 percent of respondents believe that Gorbachev wanted to reform the socialist regime and that is why initiated a complex of reforms named perestroika. About 24 percent of Russians say that Gorbachev wanted to destroy the regime and make Russia develop under a capitalistic scenario. 37 percent say that Gorbachev had no explicit targets and he solved the problems as they emerged.

Currently 45 percent of Russians dislike Gorbachev himself. About 34 percent say they are neutral about him. Only 13 percent of respondents say they approve Gorbachev. Three years ago his rating were almost the same as now. But about 40 percent of Russians say they approved him in 1985.

Maybe that's why Gorbachov has been living in America for the past 10 years, along with Stalin's daughter and Krushchov's son?

...Stalin's daughter and Khruschchev's son?

I belive are now both US citizens. Whoda' thunk!
I hope that the New York Times, Pulitzer winning reporter, the late, great Walter Duranty, spins constantly in his dirty commie grave.

I think it's the loss of super-power status and it's a particularly Russian thing. What's the saying about them either being on their knees or at your throat? If Stalin rose from the dead and ran today he'd be overwhelmingly elected.

It's all kind of academic and ancient history now, isn't it?

Russians don't like Gorbachev, because he destroyed "empire".

That's interesting because I remember reading that Russians had/still have great respect for Reagan.

Interesting, I didn't hear about it, but 50% of Russians think that Stalin was OK.

Problem is, at least with Gorby, he's still a commie and makes millions (go figure) on $1,000 a plate lectures.

I think the issue isn't that they didn't want reform, everyone wanted reform. It was the type of reform: the socialist, pie in the sky reform that destroyed the nation.

It's all kind of academic and ancient history now, isn't it? Gorbachev is still very active in the international arena. Do a search on his foundation mission statement and activities.

Polls show Russians mostly dislike perestroika

No kidding. Does this have anything to do with the poll that says "Most Russians miss Soviet Union?"

Perestroika destroyed USSR, Russians think - RBC, 15.03.2005, Moscow 15:47:13.Almost a half of all Russians (48%) believe that the USSR's collapse was Perestroika's main consequence, an opinion poll, conducted by ROMIR Monitoring in connection with the 20th anniversary of the beginning of Soviet political reforms (known as Perestroika), has shown. Thirty percent of the respondents believe that the country lost its status as a superpower as a result of Perestroika.

Hmmmm....

Russians mostly dislike perestroika + Perestroika destroyed USSR = Russians miss Soviet Union?

What's wrong with my logic jb?

As usual you see the trees not the forest. When people complain it destroyed the USSR, they're not complaining about the screwed up Soviet Economy or Soviet Government (try as you can the Communists only garner 13% of the vote and have been dropping for the past 3 elections). They're complaining about the national integrity.

Your simplistic trash can logic misses one important fact. The Russian people will never go back to communism. They more than any other people know communism does not work.

Not really.

The cause is the same though you should look at the other consequence of Gorbachev's politics.

Lots of people do not like Gorbachev, becuase after his reforms they found themselves in dire straits. No jobs, no money, no medical service. And what is the worst of all - absolutely no future.

Gorby should be standing trial in a Vilnius courtroom.

Well, I do not know about integrity, but people were a helluva lot friendlier than now. Like in the Bible "nor Hellenic, nor Jew". They simply did not make the difference based on who you are by birth. Now they do.
