RAMADI, Iraq - The deputy commander of the Iraqi army in western Al-Anbar province was shot dead by US troops at a checkpoint Tuesday night, a police officer said."The US forces opened fire at 8:00 pm (1700 GMT) on Brigadier General Ismail Swayed al-Obeid, who had left his base in Baghdadi to head home," police Captain Amin al-Hitti said.
"They spotted him on the road after the curfew, which goes into effect at 6 pm," the officer said in Baghdadi, 185 kilometres (142 miles) west of the capital.
No immediate reaction was available from the US military.
US forces have struggled to build up Iraqi security forces in Al-Anbar, where the country's insurgency is at its strongest, and many police and national guard units are suspected of having been infiltrated by rebels.
confirming sources??..remember how NBC had to retract a story last week?
How do you say "don't you know who I am" in Iraqii?
If this were true it would be all over the news. Keep the source in mind.
what a hellhole. well, hopefully the Iraqi army won't pull an Italy on us...
The real story should come out within a few....
If true, Damn!
That was my thought.
I'll wait for confirmation on this one.
Mabe it was a female Italian journalist in disguise?
If true, there is a systemic, major break down in coms and orders. Or worst, sabotage and disinfo being injected on purpose. I have heard rumors that foreign intelligence services have been recruiting troops in Iraq. Something else to consider.
Either he was stupid or running errands for the terrorists. In either case we don't need or want him commanding anybody.
I'm glad to see the troops are shooting first and asking questions later. There's no other way with these guys.
"Either he was stupid or running errands for the terrorists."
My thought as well.
That was 1700GMT; that would my local 10AM MST; I have CBS Evening news on right now, and not a word yet. If true I would expect them of all nets to be trumpeting it.
If they aren't running it after having 6+ hours to get a nasty word out about it, I have my doubts.
I'll give them a few more minutes, then switch back to Fox.
I give this report no credence yet, but let's be real here--this shouldn't be happening. Our soldiers killing the wrong people is a bad thing.
If this is correct.
Prayers for the Iraqi general and his family.
Maybe, since he was the deputy commander of the Iraqi troops in the region, he thought he was entitled to be out after curfew. Why is it that when mistakes like this happen, some of us always feel like the person shot must have been doing something wrong. That is no better than the idiots on the other side saying the troops shooting him must have been doing it on orders or that it was some kind of conspiracy.
Information news ping I do not want write Thank you
Wow. Someone more cynical than me!
