Italy will start withdrawing its troops from Iraq in September, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has said.

"We will begin to reduce our contingent even before the end of the year, starting in September, in agreement with our allies," he said in an interview on state television.

Italy has 3,000 troops in Iraq, the fourth largest foreign contingent after the United States, Britain and South Korea.

As things progress in Iraq, this is a natural outcome. Thanks to Italy for their support.

If we still have troops in Kosovo, we should pullout. Let the EU-ro-peons deal with it.

I'm fed up with these wussies dumping everything in our lap.

Italy goes wobbly....I'm shocked! Wonder if the pullout includes the light carrier group.

I would not be too terribly surprised if US force levels are dropping by September. We have been training Iraqis and I would hope that they could provide more and more of their own security as time goes by.

That's how I want to view it as well. Thanks Italy.

Berlusconi has made Italy a staunch ally in Iraq. There is no reason to think that there is anything to be read into a withdrawal six months from now. If the announcement helps him politically then all the better. In the meantime we should still pass up the Bordeaux for the Supertuscans (they're just as good if not better anyway).

How can this be?

And ALL this time I thought we were "going it alone"!
