Malt liquor beer drinkers drink more
UPI ^ | March 14

LOS ANGELES, March 14 (UPI) -- Malt liquor beer drinkers are more likely to be homeless, unemployed, receive public assistance and tend to drink more alcohol, according to a U.S. study.

"Measuring MLB (malt liquor beer) consumption is difficult because

MLBs differ from other beer beverages in two important aspects: container size and alcohol content by volume," said Ricky Bluthenthal of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles.

"We found that the combination of these differences resulted in the average malt liquor drinker in our study consuming 80 percent more alcohol per drink than the average regular beer drinker."

In addition, MLBs can be sold in containers as large as 40-ounce bottles, known as "40s," commonly sold chilled and wrapped in brown paper bags for immediate consumption, according to Rhonda Jones-Webb of the University of Minnesota.

Based on previous research, we know that MLBs because of price per

volume and availability are likely to be more attractive to lower-income drinkers, according to Bluthenthal.

The findings are published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

But read the article closer - "... sold in 40 oz. bottles ready to go.."

Well, so what? Handy and convenient, I'll bet. So what is implied here, that beer should only be available in 12oz increments, or that people ought not to have the ability to get snockered should the need arise?? What I get is that consumers prefer 40oz containers which is just over a liter anyway. Folks, it's not the container.

What's being implied is that cheap alcohol in quantity has a market at the lower end of the socio-economic scale and that manufacturers have reacted to meet that "need."

You can extrapolate that out to say that beer has replaced hard liquor as the adult beverage of choice among the "target market" because of its availability and price.

But the fact remains that essentially consumers prefer 7 point beer in 40 oz containers. I don't see this as a revelation, somehow. </sarcasm>

It sounds like a gun control argument, vaguely.

As I'm sure you know, there is another class of drinker that buys those "nips" that are always confined to the check-out counters of the liquor store. When you see a well-dressed patron order a couple of "nips" and a soda...well, you can figure they will be consumed in the car before they get home to the spouse.

The makings of a fine teenagers evening:

2 40's of OE 800
Two 7/11 Beef and Bean Burritos
The Drive In showing American Grafitti and The Sting
Making out with Lola Rogers in the back seat
Lola throwing up all over the back seat
Making Lola clean the back seat

Ahh yes, prom night.

i should call my beloved senators chuckie and hillary and urge them to immediately pass a supplemental to the budget so that lower-income drinkers could upgrade to 1982 Mouton

Typically rear-view mirror study that reverses cause and effect in order to preserve someone's precious victimhood. It's like studying sneezing and concluding that it causes colds.

I prefer to buy my beer in half-barrel kegs; it's about 40% cheaper that way!

Seriously, Victory HopDevil is one of the finest brews on the planet, not to be missed if one is a "hophead".

And I'm not the only one who thinks so:

Beer Advocate
