It only makes sense that Chicom espionage increased after Bush took office, they didn't have the Clintonistas handing over whatever they wanted.

I think the Chicoms have done quite well under the Bush Administration.

Keep shopping at Wal-Mart everybody.

# How do PRC intelligence assets infilitrate existing US based companies, steal their secrets, and use them to undertake broader espionage activities?

Well said.

Here's a crazy idea- replace the income tax dollar-for-dollar with a tax on imports. Overnight, we'd be prospering and the ChiComms would be bankrupt.

They become joint venture partners in some activity. Maybe it's oil drilling or telecommunications. Maybe it's computers or aviation. As a partner, you have access to all the data and technology.

Ka-ching!

Presumably, our intelligence agencies are on the case, right?

They buy them; just like they recently purchsed IBM.

Oh, you cannot imagine. Most of our personal data, and financial transactions, including those of politicians, business leaders and very wealthy individuals are easily accessible by people by working at various U.S. companies (e.g. banks, mobile phone companies, credit bureaus, insurance companies, etc.) who have ties to Chinese intelligence. It is too easy and there is basically no security.

Yes indeed. Also, get lots of "students" who are studying in the US hired at them. And as for any hiring going on in the PRC, be sure to have a number of Er Bu agents go and apply for the positions.

Yep. They hire H1Bs who have PRC passports. Now, do you think for one moment that the security screening that goes with said hiring would be capable of detecting an intelligence asset or even someone in the PLA? Especially, considering the possibility that the passport is a fake?

That is EXACTLY how the founding fathers thought we should raise Federal budgets.

"What seems to be lacking in this discussion is the implication of an economic giant's turning into a military and political giant."

I've never understood our politician's hurry to make one of our most feared enemies an economic superpower. I do understand Western businessmen who look for the short term profits and ignore the long term perils.

The theory seems to be that China will become docile once it become a wealthy nation. That sounds good on paper, but in reality all it does is build up their military. China doesn't worship the bottom line as much as Wall Street would like them to.

China has different long term goals.

no one would honestly expect that our bureaucrats who grew up mostly on green, leafy streets would be the equals of the agents from abroad.

You just asked about the whole business/theory of world wide espionage - just substitute "Any Country" for "US" - in one question. I would say there are volumes on the subject. Spying is the second oldest profession. What was the name of Moses's spy?

I have been amazed for 12-15 years at the number of mainland Chinese that live and work in my county and are allowed to return to China every year. They must be doing something they Reds want done.

You've raised a great point. The simple process of growing up in the PRC, for the average low to mid level asset, would be a sheer hell, from the perspective of most folks here. Never enough personal space, lots of lousy food, hot, miserable summers, horrible odors, squatting (to do tasks, to eat, to do other things), immense pressure to perform academically without having quiet places to study, etc. Know your enemy ...
