Atlanta police handcuffed Good Morning America booker Mike Nagel this morning after complaints about his disorderly conduct, TVNewser has learned. Nagel was trying to interrupt NBC's interview with Atlanta hostage Ashley Smith this morning. (And some of it happened on-air: does anyone have screen grabs from 'Today?') Here's how the incident unfolded, according to sources at both networks:
ABC, really, really wanted an exclusive interview with Smith. And they thought they had it: They were under the impression that they were the only network morning show with the Smith interview. But Smith's attorney had arranged for NBC's 'Today' show to pre-tape an interview with her prior to 7am. Then she would walk around the corner to ABC's bureau for a live chat on GMA.
NBC and Smith's attorney planned to pick the guest up at her mother's house, where she spent the night. But ABC beat them to it, sending a limo to pick Smith up -- against the attorney's request, according to NBC. (A rumor floating around 30 Rock says that Nagel pretended to work for NBC.) Smith hopped in the car and rode over to the ABC bureau. Needless to say, Smith's attorney wasn't thrilled. (ABCers believe it was a case of miscommunication between attorney and client.)

What is "NBC?" Also, what is "ABC?"
Aren't they the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) and the American Bowling Congress?
I think they used to be a thing called "networks" but I'm not sure...
ABC cBS NBC

He's got a Katie Curick "jones" I guess.
Hannity did a great interview with her on radio this afternoon.
LOL!
Who is it who does the Today Show updates for us periodically? Governsthebeast or something? I'm having a senior moment and know she'd love this article.
ping
Bless you and I'm embarrassed I couldn't get the name exactly right.
We need a directory!
Did Hannity replay the Byrd, Rangel, Dean, etc. comments
about Republicans (like he does foe every other guest)
and ask for her opinion?
Here's my account of what I saw, sharing your wish for governsleastgovernsbest fine TODAY reporting:
"I hope governsleastgovernsbest reports on Ashley's TODAY interview, but until then:
I watched Matt Lauer interview Ashley Smith on TODAY. He constantly interrupted her with more questions. She was uninterrupted last night when she told the story to a group of reporters...it was a riveting tale, full of detail, emotional, just amazing! This TODAY interview proves once again, Matt and his ilk are indispensible...as idiots!!!
As Ashley was interviewed..for some wierd reason, on a chilly, noisy sidewalk in mid-town Atlanta, a man with a cellphone was trying to get on camera behind her. A big burly NBC man kept between him and the camera, but the man kept moving, yelling in anger, and finally a cop helped get the man off camera. Very distracting as this woman is trying to answer Lauer's questions.
If Matt were a half good interviewer, he would have asked how her husband died, not just said " he had died 4 years earlier).
If I miss her interview on FOX, I hope someone will describe it. (Funny NBC aside: On the bottom of the screen NBC put up that this was her first live interview, ignoring the fact that last night she was in front of a bank of cameras telling the entire story of what happened to her.)"
Thanks for that information. Lauer is indeed a terrible interviewer and sometimes I wonder if he deliberate interrupts so staunch the flow of emotion on a subject matter like Christianity that he feels will resonate too closely with the audience.
I'm being paranoid and need to get a good night's sleep :-)
De nada. 8^)
I watched the interview this morning, and must admit that I didn't notice the shenanigans with the GMA producer going on in the background. I do recall being surprised that the interview was taking place on the street rather than in a studio.
PS to Peach: I'm a he.
"Fake but accurate".
LOL!
I'm so sorry. Unless a screen name is obvious, I never know who is female and who is male.
Mr. Governsleastgovernsbest, you do a wonderful job reporting for us and today a few other freepers filled in and gave some additional information for which I am very grateful.
No prob, Peach. I'll just assume it was your feminine solidarity that led you to conclude that someone doing a 'wonderful job reporting' was a woman ;-)
Does anybody know if these people get paid to appear on these programs or is it free?
