Iraq: the Americans were to be unaware of the release of Sgrena

ROME - the operation to release Giuliana Sgrena, hostage in Iraq, was to proceed without the knowledge of the Americans, according to an Italian General. An Italian secret agent was killed by American shootings during the repatriation of the journalist towards the airport of Baghdad.

The General, Mario Marioli, assistant commander of the multinational body in Iraq, stated to have received twice the order not to warn the American ally of the operation. It was expressed in a report/ratio quoted Saturday by "Repubblica" and intended for the Roman magistrates inquiring into the death of the agent Nicola Calipari, killed by American shootings on March 4 close to Baghdad.

The Marioli General stated to have discussed twice with Mr. Calipari to ask to him whether it were advisable to inform the American ally of the operation. First once, between 16 hours and 17 hours, "the answer is that the ally was to be informed in no manner", it indicated.

Second once in the evening, whereas the hostage was already free but the operation not completed yet, the General asked whether it were to inform the ally of their return to the airport with Giuliana Sgrena aboard car. "One answered me ' non' although I announced to them that that can involve waiting of fifteen minutes at the check-point at the entry of the airport", it has says.

The témoignagne of the Marioli General could contribute to reconstitute the circumstances which led American soldiers patrols some close to the airport of Baghdad to open fire on the car of the secret agent, killing it and wounding the journalist hardly released one month of captivity in Iraq.

Did you see the article where Berlusconi rebuked her publically regarding her statements about the USA targeting her.

And .. this proves again .. you cannot TARGET someone IF YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW THEY'RE THERE!!

I think apologies are in order from the Italian Parliament and press to the US military.

It is good to see that there are still a few honorable Italians to take on the communist filth.

The Italian brass played a very dangerous and foolish game and an Italian agent ended up paying the ultimate price.

In regards to the American checkpoint, it functioned exactly as it was intended to.

Apologies also for the future victims of terrorism financed by Italy's ransom paying.

What could have been their reason for this, it makes no sense.

Not likely the Italian parliament or press will apologize. Not because they don't want to lose face, necessarily, but because they are genuinely convinced--all evidence to the contrary--that our people gunned their people down purposely. Facts don't matter and truth is relative to the mindset at work here. Ask me, the wars we're fighting right now--culturally or militarily--aren't against Islamic extremists or communists or whomever, but rather, against those who don't accept the notion of objective truth, for whom reality is based on perception, what they desperately want to believe instead of what is.

They didn't want us to know that they were paying a ransom, especially since they've agreed not to pay ransoms.

The General is blaming the dead guy. May prove tricky to verify.

It'll be interesting to see how much play this gets in the MSM and also in other countries, including Italy.

You have hit the nail on the head, people act on their feelings, sometimes in-spite of the facts.

A Federal Judge in Detroit (Cohen) admitted he is indifferent towards reality, when he manipulates the jury pool.

Boy, did that turn out to be one huge mistake.

>>>The knee-jerk Italian public is going to feel mighty stupid before this is over<<<

I'd say that the knee-jerk public all over the world is made of alleged "conservatives" so ready to buy the leftist media garbage about what the rection of the Italian people was. We hate the likes of Sgrena twice as much, mind you. She was laughed off even by many leftist pols until the American MSM (NYT, CNN and the same old lying bunch) made it so big that they jumped on the bandwagon. But the people, a majority of it, would rather see Sgrena dead than the nation dishonored and the USA slandered.

But there is a little problem with this general as well as Smegma. At first he said that he didn't about the operation himself, now he says he knew, but didn't tell the Amis. In both cases, Americans weren't told, but that is the kind of inconsistency that can prove very damaging to credibility.

Thank you for the links. Now, you understand why I married into an Italian family!

Nobody with a bit of common sense believes this woman. Shame on her, she is a disgace to all Italians. 400 bullets and a tank? Sweety, you'd be so very dead!

Re the hostage ransom: What is wrong with the Italian gov't?
After what has happened, don't you think that you should have left her there? Hello????????

This is just about the cleanest babblefish translation I've seen. But it doesn't explain WHY they didn't tell us what was going on.
