The problem with environmentalists is their own demogoguery and refusal to reasonably discuss issues, and perhaps admit to being wrong once in a while. Such self-righteousness in any view is often shunned.

”The loss of credibility is tragic because reasonable environmentalists - without alarmism or exaggerations - are urgently needed.” Without alarmism, no one would notice the enviro-wacko's. They use the tactics of the Trial Lawyer - “Ralph Nader—ism” to the n-th degree.

”Given the uncertainties and trade-offs, priority should go to avoiding environmental damage that is irreversible, like extinctions, climate change and loss of wilderness. And irreversible changes are precisely what are at stake with the Bush administration's plans to drill in the Arctic wildlife refuge, to allow roads in virgin wilderness and to do essentially nothing on global warming. That's an agenda that will disgrace us before our grandchildren.” And what is the foregoing, save alarmism?

”So it's critical to have a credible, nuanced, highly respected environmental movement.” But I never see any nuance, only the same-old-aunce of alarmism.

...single most important issue to Earth in the long run: climate change.

On the scale of millennium maybe, not decades.

We need an environmental movement that is truly, honestly, a watchdog against those who are screwing things up for the rest of us. I do believe that there are people and organizations out there that show a willful disregard and disrespect for the enivironment. I don't want to see tons of poison dumped into a thriving river just because a company doesn't know what else to do with it - and I have seen the results of that in my home town. I believe we need a few wild-eyed people to make us ask ourselves if we really want to proceed with some plans that would clearly have a major impact on a local environment, and we need people to tweak us once in a while when we do a little too much blacktop landscaping.

Having said that. I don't believe too many of those people are in a position of authority at the moment. Most of the organizations and individuals who are screaming about the environment today are using it as an excuse for their anti-industrial, anti-capitalist efforts, and they will not be happy until the industrialized West is reduced to a bunch of feral tribes roaming the land scrounging for leftovers from the rest of the animals.

>The Earth is NOT fragile.<

It's as fragile as a sumo wrestler; I've said that for a long time. What IS truly fragile is civilization.

That's close, but what's really fragile is LIBERTY.

The history of government shows that it can be lost in an instant.

He may be a mental midget, but:

But environmental alarms have been screeching for so long that, like car alarms, they are now just an irritating background noise.

is dead on right!

This guy's an idiot. After bemoaning 35 years of screeching environutso false warnings, he concludes with his own screeching environutso false warnings.

In the 1970's, the environmental movement was convinced that the Alaska oil pipeline would devastate the Central Arctic caribou herd. Since then, it has quintupled.

Fishing is great near those big oil platforms.

Unsettling Discoveries
A report once prepared by four environmental leaders, including Tom Wathen, then an environment program officer at the Pew Charitable Trusts, contains this language:

"For considerable sums of money, public opinion can be molded, constituents mobilized, issues researched, and public officials button-holed, all in a symphonic arrangement."
Mark Dowie's misattribution!

Americans are unaware of just how "symphonically" their environmental opinions have been molded by big-money foundations that tell green groups what to do and how to do it, all with the help of bureaucrats providing federal grants and insider policy manipulation.

This "iron triangle" of:

wealthy foundations,
grant-driven environmental groups,
and zealous bureaucrats cuts off natural resource extraction from America's federal lands, ending the supply of timber, minerals, food, and fiber you use every day.

calls the gradual removal of resource workers from rural lands "transition," envisioning gentrification with upscale retirees, modem gypsies and rat-race refugees in a boutique economy.

destroys the lives and jobs of rural resource workers, whose cries of anguish and anger are called "incivility" by the rich and powerful who are destroying them.

tightens their regulatory grip on private property so you can't use what you own—and you can't get compensation for what you lose.

increases the size of big government by taking more land for "nature preserves" even though government already owns nearly half the nation.

widens the rural-urban prosperity gap. While cities enjoy a booming economy, rural communities suffer severe economic pain caused by the "iron triangle" through bans on logging, mining, ranching, farming, and all forms of natural resource extraction.

perverts the media you rely on, rearranging your mind, making sure you believe what they want you to believe and crushing all opposing views.

dismantles industrial civilization piece by piece.
